Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Philadelphia Phillies vs Washington Nationals
Game 2 of a 3-game set between the visiting Philadelphia Phillies and the Washington Nationals will take place on Saturday at 4:05 pm EST at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C… Currently, these 2 NL East squads represent the 3rd and 4th place teams within the division. This will be the first matchup of the year amongst these two teams, however, the Phillies have won 5 of the last 8 matchups, yet, have lost 5 of their last 7 games at Nationals Park.
Philadelphia Phillies's Latest Performance :
After a 4-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 22nd, the Philadelphia Phillies went on the lose their next series against the Arizona Diamondbacks as well as a 3-game set versus the Atlanta Braves. In addition to this, the Phillies have lost the first 2 games of a 3-game set with the Miami Marlins. To date, the Phillies are facing their longest losing streak of the season, and it will be interesting to see how this once surging team will respond to a string of losses where they have been heavily outscored (24-7) by their opponents. Nonetheless, the Phillies have not been strong at all on the road (5-8 ML/ATS); Yet, they must somehow get it together and show even more intensity and focus on the offensive end in which to regain their consistency from earlier in the season.
For the season, the Phillies are averaging 4.52 runs per game (17th) with a team batting average of .232 (25th), 26 homers (26th), along with 16 stolen bases on the year (11th). Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 3.73 (10th) with 249 strikeouts (16th), along with 14 quality starts (9th).
Odubel Herrera (.337 BA on 104 AB), Rhys Hoskins (.301 BA on 93 AB), and Cesar Hernandez (.279 BA on 104 AB) have been the stalwarts for this Phillies offensive attack. Maikel Franco (.250 BA on 84 Ab) and Scott Kingery (.217 BA on 92 AB) are also critical to the Philadelphia offense.
Aaron Nola (3-1) has pitched 38.1 innings this year while allowing 11 runs on 27 hits, 2 homers, 10 walks, and 28 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.58 while Nick Pivetta (1-1) has pitched 33 innings while allowing 12 runs on 30 hits, 2 homers, 7 walks, and 34 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.27 for the season.
Washington Nationals's Latest Performance :
The Washington Nationals have lost 3-straight series in a row to the all NL West teams recently: Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Nationals followed this up with a 3-game series loss to the dangerous Arizona Diamondbacks on April 29th. They have, however, won the first 2 games of a 4-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates, which seems to suggest that they have thrown off the shackles of those losses in an effort to obtain some wins despite their less than stellar play recently. In all, the Nationals are losers of 6 of their last 10, however, have won their last 3 and looking to continue their success against a Phillies team that they have matched up well against in the past.
For the season, the Nationals are averaging 4.39 runs per game (18th) with a team batting average of .239 (16th), 31 homers, 12th) along with 31 stolen bases (1st). their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.96 (14th) with 280 strikeouts (5th) along with 13 quality starts on the year (9th).
Howie Kendrick (.299 BA on 97 AB), Trea Truner (.268 BA on 112 AB), Bryce Harper (.253 BA on 87 AB), and Michael A. Turner (.221 BA on 95 AB) have been the offensive leaders for this Washington Nationals squad thus far.
Max Scherzer (5-1, 39 IP, 10 R, 23 H, 2 HR, 9 BB, 57 SO, 1.62 ERA) and Gio Gonzales (3-2, 33.2 IP, 11 R, 34 H, 1 HR, 14 BB, 37 SO, 2.67 ERA) have been the most consistent on the pitching staff while Stephen Strasburg (2-3, 39.2 IP, 18 R, 31 H, 7 HR, 10 BB, 43 SO, 3.63 ERA) and Tanner Roark (1-2, 31 IP, 14 R, 20 H, 5 HR, 11 BB, 28 SO, 3.77 ERA) have also been solid on the mound for the Nationals this year.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This matchup will be a true gut check game on Saturday as the struggling Philadelphia Phillies battle the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park. The Nats have been slowly heating up lately winning 3-striaght and would like nothing better than to continue their home stand with a couple wins versus NL East rival Phillies. The Philllies, on the other hand, are reeling and simply looking to get a win to stop their present bleeding.
Against The Spread Selection: Washington Nationals
My reason for the pick :
Again, the Phillies, at one point, looked as if they were primed for greatness this season. As they continue to show small flashes of the team they were earlier in the season, they have truly hit a huge wall that they have not been able to wake up from as of yet. Facing a hot Washington Nationals team will either knock them further into unconsciousness, or, wake them up enough to regain their footing and focus in which to take care of business. While this may indeed occur at some point soon, for game 2, I will side with the Nationals pummeling the Phillies on Saturday.
