Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Chicago Cubs vs St. Louis Cardinals
The finale of a 3-game set between the visiting Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals will take place on Saturday at 2:15 pm EST at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri. Currently, the Cubs are in 1st place in the NL Central while the Cardinals occupy the 4th spot in the division. This is the 2nd series of the year amongst these two teams with each team winning a game apiece while the other 2 games were postponed due to weather conditions. In recent matchups, however, the Cubs have won 8 of the last 10 matchups while splitting the last 6 games at Busch Stadium.
Chicago Cubs 's Latest Performance :
The Cubs come into this game winners of 5 of their last 6 games to there the O/U was 0-6. After winning a 3-game set with the Colorado Rockies on 4-22 along with tying a 2-game set with the AL Central leading Cleveland Indians, the Cubs swept the Brewers on 4-29 in a 4-game set. They are currently tied in a 3-game series with the Rockies where after picking up a 3-2 home win to begin the series, the Cubs were defeated by a score of 3-1 in game 2. In all, the Cubs have been, for the most part, very consistent this season, as expected; However, this matchup against the Brewers will serve as a measuring stick as to (1) how good the Brewers are, in general, and/or (2) if they indeed have what it takes to take out the Cubs and potentially win the NL Central.
For the season, the Cubs are averaging 4.86 runs per game (6th) with a team batting average of .244 (13th), 28 homers (23rd) along with 6 stolen bases (29th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.48 (8th) with 244 strikeouts (21st) with 14 quality starts on the season, good for 10th in the MLB.
Kris Bryant (.287 BA on 87 AB), Kyle Schwarber (.302 BA on 63 AB), Javier Baez (.299 BA on 77 AB), and Jason Heyward (.277 BA on 65 AB) have spearheaded the Cubs offensive attack this year. Wilson Contreras has also been critical to the scoring attack with a batting average of .274 on 73 at bats.
Jon Lester (2-1) has been solid this year pitching 33 innings while allowing 14 runs on 28 hits, 4 homer, 13 walks, and 27 strikeouts with an ERA of 32.73 while Tyler Chatwood (2-3) has pitched 28.2 innings while allowing 9 runs on 20 hits, 1 homer, 22 walks, and 27 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.83. Kyle Hendricks (2-2) has also pitched 36.2 innings while allowing 13 runs on 31 hits, 8 homers, 9 walks, and 29 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.19 for the season.
St. Louis Cardinals's Latest Performance :
After an up and down season, things seemed to be working well for the St. Louis Cardinals after their 3-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds on 4-22 along with a 2-1 home series win over the Mets; However, they were swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates on the road on 4-29. Nonetheless, they redeemed themselves in the following 2-game set a 2-0 series sweep over the lowly Chicago White Sox on 5-2. In all, the Cardinals seek to bring this momentum into their all-important series with the Cubs.
For the season, the Cardinals are averaging 4.55 runs per game (15th) with a team batting average of .235 (24th), 37 homers (12th), along with 15 stolen bases (16th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.32 (4th) with 245 strikeouts (20th) and 14 quality starts on the year (12th).
Tommy Pham (.330 BA on 94 AB), Jose Martinez (.294 BA on 102 AB), Paul DeJong (.269 BA on 104 AB), and Yadier Molina (.269 BA on 104 AB) have been the most consistent batters at the plate for St. Louis this season. How Chicago Cubs & St. Louis Cardinals Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, the Cubs are 16-12 ATS while the O/U is 11-16-1. On the other hand, the St. Louis Cardinals are 17-12 ATS while the O/U is 12-14-3.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
These two teams always matchup well with each other in that they are not only division foes, but, they are currently fighting to maintain and/or increase their position in the NL Central standings. The Cardinals certainly need a win in the finale in which to increase the momentum they have already garnered from a set of recent wins. On the other hand, the Cubs wish to continue to flex their muscles against a division team that they have consistently dominated in the past.
Totals Selection: Under
My reason for the prediction :
As I have done often in this series, I will once against side with the under in this matchup in that the Cubs and Cardinals are known to have very low-scoring outings. In fact, the Under is 9-5 in last 14 matchups amongst these 2 squads with the under being 4-5-1 in the last 10 outings at Busch Stadium. In all, I expect this to be yet another defensive and pitching outing where runs will again be scarce, however, the individual effort(s) on the mound will definitely be interesting to watch.
