Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Colorado Rockies vs New York Mets

A 3-game set between the visiting Colorado Rockies and the New York Mets will take place at Citi Field in Queens, New York, on Sunday afternoon at 1:10 pm EST.  The Rockies are currently in 2nd place within the NL West division while the Mets occupy the top spot in the NL East division just ahead of the Atlanta Braves.  This will be the first meeting of the year amongst these two teams, however, both teams have split their last 6 meetings with the Mets winning their last matchup at Citi Field.

Colorado Rockies's Latest Performance :

Despite a decent season, the Colorado Rockies are losers of 3 of their last 5 games thanks to a terrible ending to a 3-game home series to the Miami Marlins along with a rough start in game 1 of a 3-game set on the road at Wrigley Field against the Cubs.  In all, the Rockies look to turn the tide on the road against a Mets team that can be very dangerous at Citi Field.

For the season, the Rockies are averaging 3.81 runs per game (26th) with a team batting average of .221 (30th), 37 homers (5th), along with 19 stolen bases (5th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.40 (19th) with 256 strikeouts (12th), along with 14 quality starts (7th).

Nolan Arenado (.308 BA on 91 AB), DJ LeMahieu (.290 BA on 107 AB), Charlie Blackmon (.286 BA n 98 AB), and Trevor Story (.227 BA on 110 AB) have been the leading offensive superstars for the Colorado Rockies thus far.  Chad Betts (3-1) has pitched 37 innings while allowing 10 runs on 26 hits, 4 homers, 13 walks, and 25 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.43 while Jon Gray (3-4) has pitched 39.2 innings while along 23 runs on 42 hits, 5 homers, 10 walks, and 41 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.99.

New York Mets's Latest Performance :

The New York Mets have lost 4 of their last 6 games to where the O/U was 2-2-1.  They have not won a series since 4-15 when they won a 3-game home set against the Milwaukee Brewers.  Since then, the Mets have lost a 3-game set at home against division rival Washington, while also losing a 4-game road set to the Atlanta Braves despite the finale of the series being postponed due to weather.  Furthermore, they dropped a 3-game road set to the Cardinals before getting back to form with a 2-1 series win over the Padres on 4-29.

For the season, the Mets are averaging 4.78 (10th) with a team batting average of .239 (17th), 27 homers (23rd), along with 12 stolen bases (22nd).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.79 (11th) with 274 strikeouts (9th) along with 10 quality starts on the season (22nd).

Asdrubal Cabrera (.337 BA on 104 AB), Todd Frazier (.266 BA on 94 AB), Yoenis Cespedes (.252 BA on 107 AB), and Jay Bruce (.250 BA on 92 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Mets this season.  Amed Rosario (.226 BA on 84 AB) has also been a critical component to the Mets’ scoring attack.

Jacob deGrom (3-0, 39.1 IP, 10 R, 30H, 2 HR, 11 BB, 48 SO, 2.06 ERA), Noah Syndergaard (2-1, 40.2 IP, 17 R, 40 H, 3 HR, 6 BB, 49 SO, 3.10 ERA), and Robert Gsellman (3-0, 15 IP, 4 R, 13 H, 0 HR, 6 BB, 19 SO, 1.80 ERA have been the bright spots for their talented pitching staff.

How Colorado Rockies & New York Mets Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Colorado Rockies are 16-15 ATS while the O/U is 12-17-2.  On the other hand, the NY Mets are 17-10 ATS while the O/U is 14-12-1.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

These two teams will matchup for the first time this year, as stated, with the Mets trading wins for losses while the Rockies are just losing altogether.  The finale on Sunday will afford one of these teams the opportunity of allowing their momentum to carry over into the next set.  Colorado would love to increase their solid record on the road (12-7 ATS) while also halting their current 3-game skid while the Mets would love to continue their home stand with a win against the Rockies along with maintain its lead over the Braves in the NL East.

Totals Selection: Under

My reason for the prediction :

With the pitching staff that both these teams possess combined with the offensive funks that each find themselves a part of along with knowing that they each need a win in which to gain momentum at a time when it is badly needed is leading me to choose the under in Sunday’s contest.  Though the trends point to the Over being the play on the strength of the last 6 games played against these two squads, judging by how badly each team needs a win, I would expect game 3 to be a interesting defensive/pitching duel.
