Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
New York Mets vs Cincinnati Reds
The Cincinnati Reds are set to host game 2 of a 3 game series with National League foe in the New York Mets at Great American Ball Park with a 7:10 first pitch. After this series, the Mets and Reds will not meet again until after the all-star break when New York host a 3 game home series starting on 8/6.
New York Mets's Latest Performance :
The New York Mets started off the year as one of the best teams in baseball as they exhibited great starting pitching and an effective offensive approach, but as of recent the Mets have not been able to find their mojo as they have lost 8 out of their last 10 matchups and have slid down the division standings. The Mets have been in the middle of a circus with the whole Matt Harvey ordeal, and they showed they might be distracted by it as they dropped another game to the Colorado Rockies. The Mets had their bottom of the rotation up in a 5/5 matchup with the Rockies as they has Steven Matz on the mound, and although Matz has had his fair share of struggles this season he had a fairly good outing. Matz was able to go 6 innings for the Mets and after giving up his sole run of the game in the 1st inning he settled down as he only gave up 2 more hits. The Mets on the hitting end of things were able to rack up 6 hits as a team behind the bats of Asdrubal Cabrera and Jay Bruce who had 4 of those 6 hits. Cabrera has been excellent for the Mets this year as he leads the team in batting average with a .336 and also has another 6 HRs and 20 RBIs. The Mets left 7 guys on base in this ball game and 2 guys in scoring position which is not the recipe for success in winning ball games especially in the little opportunities they had.
Cincinnati Reds's Latest Performance :
Reds Continue To Struggle
The Cincinnati Reds have been playing under the motto “let the young guys play” all season and it has shown as the Reds are easily the worst team in the MLB in both record and statistics. The Reds have struggled against some of the other bottom-feeders in the MLB as they had a rough game against the Miami Marlins who are in full rebuild mode. The Reds on 5/5 struggled in both departments of the game as they didn’t receive great pitching, and they were held scoreless on only 4 hits. The Reds started rookie Tyler Mahle who has struggled all season long, and he didn’t have an ideal outing as he picked up his 4th loss of the season due to him giving up 3 earned runs. The pitchers have struggled for the Reds all year as the starters have combined for an ERA of 5.51 and have no one who has a winning record. The Reds offense also struggled in this 5/5 matchup as they were only held to 4 hits in this ball game, and half of those hits can be accredited to the face of the franchise, Joey Votto. One of the best hitters on the team in Eugenio Suarez went 0 for 4 in this game and as good as he has been this season has not had a hot stretch over the last week. Suarez is batting .321 on the season as well as the only Red with 20+ RBIs, but over the last 7 games Suarez has only been able to go 6 for 23 (.261) from the plate.
How New York Mets & Cincinnati Reds Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
New York is 17-14, 10-5 on the road.
Cincinnati is 8-25, 4-13 at home.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Jason Vargas (0-2, 16.20 ERA) for the New York Mets vs. Luis Castillo (1-4, 7.01 ERA) for the Cincinnati Reds.
Vargas last started on 5/3 against the Braves where he went 4.2 innings giving up 6 earned runs on 11 hits in a L.
Castillo last started on 5/2 against the Brewers where he went 6 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 9 hits in a L.
Cincinnati and New York both rank in the bottom 10 in runs scored.
Cincinnati ranks in the bottom 10 in team ERA while New York ranks inside the bottom 15.
Against The Spread Selection: New York Mets
My reason for the pick :
Jason Vargas has been a disaster for the Mets this season as he has gotten roughed up in both of his starts this season, but Vargas is coming off a career year in 2017 and I expect him to have knocked off all the rust he needed in his first two games. Vargas has a perfect opportunity to redeem himself in this matchup as he has the chance to go up against one of the worst teams in baseball. New York has also been one of the best teams in the MLB on the road and they are going against one of the worst home teams. Castillo hasn’t been anything excellent for the Reds as he has an ERA well over 7.00, and he won’t be much better against a team who is hungry to get back on top of the NL East. Mets win in this game.
