Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Washington Nationals vs San Diego Padres
The finale of a 3-game set between the visiting Washington Nationals and the San Diego Padres will take place at PetCo Park in San Diego, California, on Wednesday night at 10:10 pm EST. The Washington Nationals currently occupy the 4th spot in the NL East division while the Padres bring up the rear in the 5-team NL West division. This will be the 1st series of the year between these two squads, however, the Nationals have won 5 of the last 8 outings while winning 3 of 5 at PetCo Park.
Washington Nationals's Latest Performance :
The Washington Nationals have won 6 of their last 7 contests to where the O/U has been 4-4. After a 3-game series loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on 4-29, the Nationals preceded to sweep the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 4-game home set on 5-3 while also winning a home 3-game set agasint the Philadelphia Phillies on 5-6-2018. Yes, the Nationals have certainly found some consistency on both offense and defense and look to continue this against a reeling Padres team.
For the season, the Nationals are averaging 4.66 runs per game (10th) with a team batting average of .241 (18th), 44 homers (7th) along with 34 stolen bases (1st). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.69 (8th) with 350 strikeouts (3rd) along with 18 quality starts on the year (6th).
Howie Kendrick (.281 BA on 121 AB), Trea Truner (.281 BA on 135 AB), Bryce Harper (.246 BA on 114 AB), and Michael A. Taylor (.195 BA on 118 AB) have been the offensive leaders for this Washington Nationals squad thus far.
Max Scherzer (6-1, 51.2 IP, 13 R, 31 H, 3 HR, 13 BB, 80 SO, 1.74 ERA) and Gio Gonzales (4-2, 38.2 IP, 11 R, 36 H, 1 HR, 16 BB, 42 SO, 2.33 ERA) have been the most consistent on the pitching staff. Stephen Strasburg (3-3, 46.2 IP, 21 R, 38 H, 8 HR, 11 BB, 54 SO, 3.47 ERA) and Tanner Roark (2-3, 44.1 IP, 19 R, 32 H, 7 HR, 16 BB, 41 SO, 3.65 ERA) have also been solid on the mound for the Nationals this year.
San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :
The Padres come into this matchup winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U has been 2-3. They had lost their last 2 series against the New York Mets at home on 4-29 and on the road to the San Francisco Giants on 5-2. However, they followed up with a 3-game series win over the injury-plagued Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night. In all, the Padres need some wins, but, finding them against a surging Nationals team will not be easy, particularly, if San Diego’s pitching staff continues to perform inconsistently along with their bats continuing to remain cold as ice.
For the season, San Diego averages 3.91 runs per game (24th) with a team batting average of .225 (28th), 33 homers (21th) and 16 stolen bases on the year (15th). Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.51 (23rd) with 306 strikeouts (10th) and 9 quality starts thus far (30th).
Jose Pirela (.250 BA on 136 AB), Eric Hosmer (.293 BA on 116 AB), and Freddy Galvis (.231 BA on 121 AB) have been the few bright spots for this San Diego squad. Carlos Asuaje (.196 BA on 102 AB) has been relatively solid during the current campaign as well.
Joey Lucchesi (3-2) has been the most solid pitcher for the Padres this season as he has pitched 37.1 innings while allowing 15 runs on 31 hits, 5 homers, 13 walks, and 40 strikeouts while Tyson Ross (2-2) has pitched 35.2 innings while allowing 14 runs on 29 hits, 2 homers, 13 walks, and 40 strikeouts. Clayton Richard (1-4) has been very much inconsistent for the Padres this season, however, has pitched 37.2 innings while allowing 27 runs on 45 hits, 6 homers, 20 walks, and 32 strikeouts.
How Washington Nationals & San Diego Padres Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, the Washington Nationals are 18-17 ATS while the O/U is 16-17-2. On the other hand, the San Diego Padres are 12-22 ATS while the O/U is 16-16-2.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
While this will be yet another classic matchup of two teams trending in different directions, the Padres will look to carry the momentum bought forth from their prior series to ultimately get a home win against a team that they have struggled against in the past. The red-hot Washington Nationals, on the other hand, have won 6-straight and look to extend their streak against a Padre team that has struggled mightily this season, regardless of the opponent. For them to win on this matchup, San Diego simply needs to somehow grind out a hard-fought victory in which to get back into the swing of things and rise out of the cellar of the NL West division.
Against The Spread Selection: Washington Nationals
My reason for the pick :
Again, the Padres are seemingly not much of a contest for the Washington Nationals, particularly at this point in the season. It is for this reason that I will once against choose the Nationals to squeak out a tough win against a Padre team that is desperately looking to get on the right track. Again, while winning will not be a breeze for Washington in this matchup on Wednesday, I fully expect them to come to play in the finale while surviving from the momentum of an outstanding stretch in which to unleash onto their next opponent.
