Seattle Mariners's Latest Performance :

No-No In Canada

The Seattle Mariners are within striking distance of 1st place in the AL West which can be accredited to a solid offense, but one thing that has harmed the Mariners in the early going has been the lack of good outings from the starting rotation as they entered their recent series against Toronto with a 6.24 ERA. The Mariners have missed the production of James Paxton in 2018 as Paxton has been inconsistent throughout the season which is not what Seattle hoped for as Paxton went 12-5 with a 2.97 ERA in 2017. Paxton got the start on 5/8 against the Toronto Blue Jays who are a top 5 offense, and Paxton didn’t disappoint in his 8th start of the season as he was able to pitch his first career no-hitter in his home country of Canada. Paxton was able to strikeout 7 guys which have him over 67 strikeouts in the early 2018 slate which is good enough for top 5 in the MLB. The Mariners were able to back up Paxton with 5 runs on offense which can be accredited to the bats of 4 different guys. The lone HR of the game came off the bat of starting catcher Mike Zunino who hit his 5th HR in the top of the 4th inning which is a nice sight for the M’s as Zunino is only batting .185 on the season. Dee Gordon was able to extend his hot start to the season as he went 3 for 5 from the leadoff spot which contributed to his team-high batting average of .353.

Detroit Tigers's Latest Performance :

Solid Outing From Detroit

The Detroit Tigers are in a weird position as they don’t have a roster that can compete or many pieces they can trade away for prospects which has translated into an average season for the Tigers. Although the Tigers host a bunch of starters who are discounted veterans out of their prime they have been solid for the Tigers as the starting rotation has an ERA of 3.82. The Tigers received a solid start on 5/8 against the Rangers from their 8th-year starter Mike Fiers who has been improved from his 2017 self. Fiers was at the back end of the defending World Series champions rotation last season which is shown in his stat line as Fiers went 8-10 with a 5.22 ERA, but a change of scenery has benefited Fiers as he enters this series with a 3-2 record and a 4.73 ERA. Fiers was able to give the Tigers 5.1 innings where he gave up 2 earned runs which contributed to his team-high 3rd win of the season. The Tigers bullpen held up for the most part as Daniel Stumpf, Buck Farmer, Blaine Hardy, and Shane Greene gave Fiers 3.1 innings of shutout baseball. The Tigers were able to receive a good amount of offensive production from different people in the lineup as 5 different guys contributed RBIs. Jeimer Candelario was able to connect on a ball in the top of the 1st inning which got the scoring party started for Detroit as well as gave him a team-high in HRs with 5.

Against The Spread Selection: Seattle Mariners

My reason for the pick :

The Seattle Mariners are an underrated team as they sit in a division with the defending World Series champs and a stacked Los Angeles Angels roster, but the Mariners have put together some solid wins to stay within the division lead as well as the Wild Card race. Although Gonzales has struggled this season he has still been able to put together a winning record as his offense and bullpen have been their all season in support. Seattle knows they can very easily at least win this series against a below average Detroit team, and if they want to stay relevant in the AL postseason race this could be a series for that.

Betting trends for Seattle Mariners:

  • Seattle is 10-5 against AL Central opponents this season.

  • The over is 13-6 after a win this season.

  • Detroit is 21-17 with 1 day off since 2016.

  • The under is 18-11 against American League opponents this season.
