St. Louis Cardinals's Latest Performance :
Outdueled At Home
The St. Louis Cardinals used a hot streak of games to propel themselves to the top of the standings in the NL Central but after a recent skid against the Minnesota Twins, the Cardinals saw their division lead diminish to nothing. The Cardinals were out-battled by the Minnesota Twins in their recent series as the Cardinals were sluggish on both ends of the game as they were outscored 13-1 in the two-game series. The Cardinals closed out their series against the Twins on 5/8 with a game to forget as ace Carlos Martinez struggled and the offense was only able to record 2 hits. Carlos Martinez has been solid all season as he entered his 5/8 start with a 3-1 record and a top 5 ERA with a 1.40, but Martinez 8th start wasn’t as kind to him. Martinez was only able to last 5 innings as he gave up 4 runs in what was his worst start since the beginning of the season. The bullpen wasn’t much of a help to Carlos Martinez and company as the combination of Sam Tuivailala and Tyler Lyons gave up 3 earned runs in only 2 innings of work. The Cardinals on the offensive end were only able to record 1 run on 2 hits as the 1 run was contributed in the 1st inning off the bat of Jose Martinez. Martinez has been solid all season as he leads the Cardinals in RBIs with 19 and he used a solo HR in the bottom of the 1st inning to give him his 4th HR of the season.
San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :
Solid Start Results In Loss
The San Diego Padres have not been anything special in 2018 which is expected out of a team who hasn’t had a winning season since 2010, and as expected with a young team they have endured ups and downs this season. The Padres were able to beat up on divisional rivals in the Los Angeles Dodgers at the beginning of last week but they have followed that up with back to back losses against a Washington Nationals team who has been so-so this season. The Padres received a solid start from Clayton Richard on 5/8 in what was the 2nd game of their 3 game set with the Nationals, but Richards solid start was spoiled by the lack of bats from the young lineup. Richards has struggled in his 10th season as the starter enters this series with a 1-5 record and a 5.72 ERA. Richards gave the Padres 8 innings where he gave up 3 runs, but in those 8 innings Richards was able to strikeout 8 guys which has put him over 40 on the season. The struggles of the Padres bats is what ultimately harmed the squad as San Diego was only able to squeeze out 3 hits over the 9 innings. As most of the Padres roster struggled the most important piece of the team continued his slump as Christian Villanueva went 0 for 4 from the plate. Villanueva was once upon a time the top hitter in all of baseball as he led the MLB in batting average, but over his last 25 ABs Villanueva has only been able to record 1 hit.
How St. Louis Cardinals & San Diego Padres Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
St. Louis is 20-14, 8-7 on the road.
San Diego is 13-24, 7-15 at home.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Luke Weaver (2-2, 5.60 ERA) for the St. Louis Cardinals vs. Eric Lauer (1-1, 5.79 ERA) for the San Diego Padres.
Weaver last started on 5/5 against the Cubs where he went 4 innings giving up 4 earned runs on 6 hits in a ND.
Lauer last started on 5/6 against the Dodgers where he went 6 shutout innings giving up 7 hits in a W.
St. Louis ranks in the bottom 15 in runs scored while San Diego ranks in the bottom 10.
St. Louis ranks in the top 3 in team ERA while San Diego ranks in the bottom 10.
Against The Spread Selection: St. Louis Cardinals
My reason for the pick :
The Cardinals have been solid all season as they are craving another postseason berth, and they get a chance to extend their divisional lead in this game as they go against one of the worst teams in baseball. The Cardinals have been lights out in the pitching end of things as they rank in the top 3 in team ERA which should play a big role in this game as San Diego ranks in the bottom 10 in runs scored. San Diego has no interest in winning this season and with their best hitter in Christian Villanueva struggling I don’t see how this team can beat one of the better teams in the National League.
