Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Tampa Bay Rays vs Baltimore Orioles
Game 1 of the 3-game set, which will include a Saturday doubleheader, will take place on Friday night at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland, as the visiting Tampa Bay Rays will take on the Baltimore Orioles at 7:05 pm EST. The Baltimore Orioles occupy the 5th place slot in the NL East division while the Rays occupy the 4th spot. This will be the 2nd meeting of the year amongst these two teams after the Rays took 2 of 3 games on the road earlier in the season with one of the games being postponed.
Tampa Bay Rays's Latest Performance :
Recently, the Tampa Bay Rays had won 9 of 10 games with series wins over the Rangers, Twins, Orioles, and Red Sox yet losing a 3-game home set versus the Detroit Tigers. The Rays, hwoever, rebounded to beat the Toronto Blue Jays in a 3-game series at home on 5-6-2018. While they have been, for the most part, average for the year, the Rays remain a dangerous team that desperately need to kick it into a higher gear sooner rather than later.
The Rays are averaging 4.44 runs per game (16th) with a team batting average of .262 (3rd), 32 homers (25th), along with 22 stolen bases on the year (8th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.24 (19th) with 274 strikeouts (25th) and 10 quality starts (30th).
Mallex Smith (.330 BA on 91 AB), Joey Wendle (.286 BA on 84 AB) Adeiny Hechavarria (.260 BA on 104 AB) spearhead the offensive attack from the plate for the O’s while C.J. Cron (.256 BA on 121 AB) and Denard Span (.245 BA on 94 AB) are also critical to the Baltimore offense.
Blake Snell (4-1) has pitched 42.1 innings this season and allowed 12 runs on 28 hits, 4 homers, 12 walks, and 45 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.55. Chris Archer (2-2) has pitched 45.2 while allowing 28 runs on 52 hits, 6 homers, 12 walks, 48 strikeouts with an ERA of 5.32 for the season. Jake Faria (3-1) has pitched 34.2 innings this year while allowing 16 runs on 26 hits, 4 homers, 16 walks, and 30 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.15.
Baltimore Orioles's Latest Performance :
The Baltimore Orioles come into this matchup losers of 6-straight games to where the O/U was 3-3. After a 3-game home series win against the slipping Detroit Tigers on 4-29-2018, the Orioles preceded to lose the following series in a sweep against the Angels in a 3-game set on 5-3-2018 while also getting swept on the road in a 3-game series against the Oakland Athletics on 5-6-2018. There has been no consistency on either side for Baltimore thus far, however, they hope to somehow get it together in Friday’s matchup against a team that is also trying to erect themselves out of a current slump.
For the season, the Orioles average only 3.38 runs per game (29th) with a team batting average of .220 (30th), 34 homers (21th) along with 13 stolen bases on the year (23rd). Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.95 (26th) with 279 strikeouts (20th) along with 14 quality starts (15th).
Manny Machado (.346 BA, 130 AB) has been the most effective offensive option for the Orioles this year. Meanwhile, Trey Mancini (.258 BA, 124 AB) and Adam Jones (.245 BA, 139 AB) have also been effective for the offensive attack.
Dylan Bundy (1-4, 40.2 IP, 44 H, 23 R, 6 HR, 11 BB, 46 SO) and Kevin Gauseman (2-2, 43.2 IP, 38 H, 16 R, 8 HR, 12 BB, 36 SO) have pitched the most innings for the Orioles this season while Andrew Cashner (1-4, 38.2 IP, 40 H, 24 R, 9 HR, 19 BB, 37 SO) has also been serviceable for Baltimore this season.
How Tampa Bay Rays & Baltimore Orioles Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, the Tampa Bay Rays are 18-14 ATS while the O/U is 17-13-2. On the other hand, the Baltimore Orioles are 12-22 ATS while the O/U is 16-18.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This matchup will entail a habitual losing team in the Orioles versus a Rays team that has struggled throughout the year thus far, yet, had managed to garner some momentum recently, only to lose the mojo by losing 3 of their last 5 games. Again, while each team has been losing lately, the Orioles are losing by huge margins as their pitching squad has been one of the worst in the league. In all, it will be interesting to see how the Rays perform against a seemingly hopeless Orioles squad at Camden Yards on Friday.
Totals Selection: Over
My reason for the prediction :
With the over being the play in 7 of their last meetings, I will also choose the over in this matchup on Friday. Combine that with the fact that the Orioles pitching staff, as stated, has been totally horrendous this year, I expect game 2 to be a high-scoring affair to where either team can somehow pull out the victory. I personally would normally side with just about any team versus the Orioles at his point in the season, however, I feel as if the over is much more practical.
