Atlanta Braves vs Miami Marlins

The Miami Marlins are set to return back to Marlins Park for game 3 of a 4 game home series against NL East rival in the New York Mets, first pitch is set for 7:10 PM ET. These two teams have not met before this series, but they are trending in 2 opposite directions as Atlanta is the top team in the NL East while Miami sits at the bottom.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

Big Game From Markakis

The Atlanta Braves have successfully jived both young talent and veterans together to propel the Atlanta Braves to the top of the NL East through the first 35 games which has the Braves looking to finish in 1st place for the first time since the 2013 season. The Braves were able to close out their interleague matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays with a solid 5-2 win with good games from both starter Julio Teheran and OF Nick Markakis. Teheran has turned around his slow start to the season as the 27-year-old had a 7.07 ERA through his first 3 starts, and 5/9 was an example of that as Teheran went 6 shutout innings striking out 7 guys. Julio Teheran was able to pick up his 3rd win of the season and has now lowered his ERA down to a 3.14 as May has been awesome to the 6th-year starter (2-0, 0.00 ERA). Teheran’s awesome start was almost spoiled by the bullpen as reliever Peter Moylan gave up 2 earned runs in the bottom of the 8th to have the Rays in striking distance. The Braves were able to receive another great game from veteran Nick Markakis who used another solid outing from the plate to extend his team-high batting average to a .338 as well as his team-high in RBIs to 28. Markakis went 2 for 4 from the plate with 1 HR and 3 RBIs which helped extend the game to 5-0 in the 3rd inning. Markakis isn’t the only veteran who is producing this season as Freddie Freeman has also been really good in the early going as the 1B has 5 HRs and 26 RBIs.

Miami Marlins's Latest Performance :

Marlins Sloshed On Road

The Miami Marlins have been not been the ideal team to bet on this season and we were reassured of that this past series against the Chicago Cubs as they opened the series with a 14-2 loss and ended the series with a 13-4 loss. The Miami Marlins young pitching staff has taken a turn for the worse as they looked like they were trending upward but as we have seen being young has it’s downfalls as confidence levels are up and down. The Marlins can not use the being young excuse in their 5/9 matchup against the Cubs as they started one of their veteran pitchers in Wei-Yin Chen who is in his 7th season as a starter. Wei-Yen Chen got destroyed against the Cubs as he picked up his 2nd loss in only his 3rd start as he got shelled for 9 earned runs on 7 hits in only 3 innings of work. Chen has never endured a losing season in his tenure as he has been fairly good throughout his career but if Chen doesn’t turn it around he may be breaking that streak as he is 1-2 with a 10.22 ERA in the early going. The Marlins were fairly average from the plate as they were able to squeeze out 4 runs on 8 hits, but one of the guys who can take most of the credit is 5th-year SS Miguel Rojas. Rojas may only be batting .248 on the season but after a 3 for 5 game on 5/9 things may be looking up for the full-time SS. Rojas was able to knock in 2 RBIs on an HR in the top of the 7th inning which gives him his 5th HR on the season which is already more than his previous 4 seasons combined.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Atlanta is 21-14, 13-7 on the road.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Mike Soroka (1-1, 4.50 ERA) for the Atlanta Braves vs. Jarlin Garcia (1-1, 2.68 ERA) for the Miami Marlins.

Soroka last started on 5/6 against the Giants where he went 4 innings giving up 4 earned runs on 7 hits in a L.

Garcia last started on 5/7 against the Cubs where he went 4 innings giving up 7 earned runs on 6 hits in a L.

Atlanta ranks in the top 5 in runs scored while Miami ranks dead last.

Atlanta ranks in the top 10 in team ERA while Miami ranks in the bottom 10.

Against The Spread Selection: Atlanta Braves

My reason for the pick :

The Atlanta Braves are one of the best teams in baseball as they have been putting on a show in the early going, and they have done most of their damage on the road as they are great in other teams ballparks. Jarlin Garcia was one of the best starters for this young Miami Marlins pitching staff but as we have seen he isn’t on an MLB ready level yet as the youngster got slaughtered against the Cubs last go around. The Braves bats are too hot for them to slow down especially against one of the worst pitching teams in the MLB. Atlanta snags another road win.

Betting trends for Atlanta Braves:

  • Atlanta is 5-3 against left-handed pitchers this season.

  • The over is 7-3-1 as the favorite this season.

Betting trends for Miami Marlins:

  • Miami is 8-18 in night games this season.

  • The under is 11-7 at home this season.
