Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
St. Louis Cardinals vs San Diego Padres
Game 3 of a 4-game set between the visiting St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres will resume on Saturday at 8:40 pm EST at PetCo Park in San Diego, California. The Cardinals occupy the top spot in the NL Central division while the Padres are 5th place in the NL West division. This is the first meeting of the year between these two squads with the Cardinals taking 4 of the last 7 games, yet, have lost 2 of the last 3 at PetCo Park.
St. Louis Cardinals's Latest Performance :
After being winners of 5-straight games recently, the St. Louis Cardinals have dropped their last 2 home games in a 2-game set against the surging Minnesota Twins on 5-8-2018. They are, nonetheless, winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-3-1. They had been on a roll lately in sweeping a 2-game set at home against the White Sox along with a 3-game home set against the Chicago Cubs on 5-6-2018. However, they happened upon a focused and offensive minded Twins team that outscored them in the set by a total of 13 runs to 1.
For the season, the Cardinals are averaging 4.35 runs per game (18th) with a team batting average of .228 (26th), 41 homers (11th), along with 17 stolen bases (14th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.39 (5th) with 266 strikeouts (25th) and 15 quality starts on the year (13th).
Tommy Pham (.323 BA on 99 AB), Jose Martinez (.286 BA on 119 AB), Paul DeJong (.241 BA on 116 AB), and Yadier Molina (.272 BA on 114 AB) have been the most consistent batters at the plate for St. Louis this season. Marcell Ozuna (.258 BA on 126 AB) has also been solid at the plate for the Cardinals this year.
Carlos Martinez (3-1) has pitched 45 innings this year while allowing 8 runs on 28 hits, 1 homer, 19 walks, and 45 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.40 while Miles Mikolas (4-0) has pitched 40 innings and allowing 13 runs on 37 hits, 5 homers, 2 walks, and 31 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.70. Michael Wacha (4-1) has 37.2 IP, 16 R, 36 H, 3 HR, 18 BB, and 31 SO along with an ERA of 3.35.
San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :
The Padres come into this matchup winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U has been 2-3. They recently had lost a 3-game set on the road to the San Francisco Giants on 5-2-2018 before following up their lackluster play with a huge 3-game home series win over their divisions foe Los Angeles Dodgers on 5-6-2018. Nonetheless, they were not able to keep their momentum going in that they were dominated at home in yet another 3-game set versus the Washington Nationals on 5-8-2018. Nonetheless, the Padres were able to pick up the slim 2-1 win in game 3 largely due to a solid pitching performance from Joey Lucchesi along with a multiple hit night for Manuel Margot. The Padres look to continue this momentum into Saturday’s matchup with a team that they have played well against at home.
For the season, San Diego averages 3.89 runs per game (26th) with a team batting average of .228 (27th), 34 homers (20th) and 16 stolen bases on the year (15th). Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.38 (21st) with 318 strikeouts (7th) and 10 quality starts thus far (29th).
Jose Pirela (.250 BA on 140 AB), Eric Hosmer (.297 BA on 118 AB), and Freddy Galvis (.240 BA on 125 AB) have been the few bright spots for this San Diego squad. Carlos Asuaje (.194 BA on 103 AB) has been relatively solid during the current campaign as well.
Joey Lucchesi (3-2) has been the most solid pitcher for the Padres this season as he has pitched 37.1 innings while allowing 15 runs on 31 hits, 5 homers, 13 walks, and 40 strikeouts while Tyson Ross (2-2) has pitched 35.2 innings while allowing 14 runs on 29 hits, 2 homers, 13 walks, and 40 strikeouts. Clayton Richard (1-4) has been very much inconsistent for the Padres this season, however, has pitched 37.2 innings while allowing 27 runs on 45 hits, 6 homers, 20 walks, and 32 strikeouts.
How St. Louis Cardinals & San Diego Padres Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, the Cardinals are 15-19 ATS while the O/U is 13-17-4. On the other hand, the Padres are 15-22 ATS while the O/U is 17-18-2.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This matchup is an important one for both teams in that one seeks to maintain their standing in the division while the other wishes to somehow crawl out of their last place finish into a more respectable spot within their division. The problem is that the Padres have been inconsistent all season and the Cardinals have had their number in recent matchups, though not so much at PetCo Park. In all, the Padres pitching staff hopes to somehow contain the Cardinals’ offensive attack while its shaky offense will attempt to obtain some timely hits in which to get a huge win on Saturday.
Against The Spread Selection: San Diego Padres
My reason for the pick :
It is a fact that the Cardinals are indeed the better team at his juncture of the season; However, it is also true that the Padres have played well against St. Louis at PetCo in the past. It is for this reason that I will back the Padres to get the win in game 2. As I stated, the Padres have indeed lost consistently this season, yet, they possess a relatively solid pitching staff along with defense that tends to keep them in the game, despite their inconsistent offensive effort(s). In all, I will take the Padres to turn the tide in game 2 and pick up the slim victory.
