Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Cincinnati Reds vs Los Angeles Dodgers
The finale of a 4-game set between the vising Cincinnati Reds and the Los Angeles Dodgers will take place at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday at 4:10 pm EST. The Reds are currently in the 5th place slot in the NL Central while the Dodgers are in 4th place within the NL West division. This will be the first matchup of the year amongst these two teams, however, the Dodgers have dominated the Reds in the past by winning the last 6 matchups, 3 of them being at Dodger Stadium.
Cincinnati Reds 's Latest Performance :
The Reds have not been able to accomplish much of anything this season as they are losers of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-3. However, the Reds are winners of their last 2 games and seek to carry this momentum into the finale of this series. Recently, the Reds lost 2 series in a row against the Brewers as well as to the Marlins on 5-6-2018. They certainly rebounded in the next series by winning a 3-game home set versus the NY Mets on 5-9-2018. It will be interesting to see how well, or terribly, the Reds will respond to their recent success.
The Cincinnati Reds are averaging 4 runs per game (23rd) with a team batting average of .240 (19th), 32 home runs (26th), along with 15 stolen bases (19th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 5.04 (27th) with 288 strikeouts (24th), and 12 quality starts (22nd).
Jesse Winker (.265 BA on 102 AB), Scooter Gennett (.288 BA on 132 AB), Tucker Barnhart (.268 BA on 97 AB), and Joey Votto (.275 BA on 131 AB) have been valuable to the offense this year. Jose Peraza (.283 BA on 135 AB) has also been a pivotal piece in the offensive puzzle for the Reds.
Homer Bailey (0-3) has pitched 43.1 innings for the Reds while allowing 28 runs on 45 hits, 11 homers, 13 walks, and 25 strikeouts with an ERA of 5.61 while Tyler Mahle (2-4) has pitched 39.1 innings and has allowed 19 runs on 38 hits, 9 homers, 11 walks, and 42 strikeouts along with an ERA of 4.35. Finally, Luis Castillo (2-4) has pitched 40.1 innings while allowing 29 runs on 47 hits, 8 home runs, 15 walks, and 38 strikeouts with an ERA of 6.47.
Los Angeles Dodgers's Latest Performance :
The Dodgers come into this matchup losers of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-2. Recently, in a 3-game set against the San Diego Padres, the Dodgers played miserably and lost the road series, with the finale being a 3-0 shutout for the Padres. They did, however, follow the Padre series with a tie in a 2-game set against yet another NL West opponent in the Arizona Diamondbacks on 5-9-2018. In fact, a 6-3 win in game 2 of this series halted a 3-game losing skid for the Dodgers.
The Dodgers average 4.50 runs per game (13th) with a team batting average of .244 (16th), 32 homers (27th), along with 12 stolen bases (27th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.88 (11th) with 363 strikeouts (4th) along with 14 quality starts (18th).
Yasmani Grandal (.282 BA on 110 AB), Cody Bellinger (.279 BA on 136 AB), and Corey Seager (.267 BA on 101 AB) have been the leaders offensively for the Dodgers this season. Chris Taylor (.235 BA on 163 AB) and Yasiel Puig (.217 BA on 92 AB) have also been pivotal to the Dodger’s offensive attack.
Hyun-Jin Ryu (3-0) has pitched 29.1 innings while allowing 7 runs on 16 hits, 3 homers, 10 walks, and 36 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.12 while Clayton Kershaw (1-4) has pitched 44 innings while allowing 14 runs on 40 hits, 7 homers, 10 walks, and 48 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.86. Alex Wood (0-3) has pitched 45 innings while allowing 20 runs on 37 hits, 3 homers, 8 walks, and 42 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.60.
How Cincinnati Reds & Los Angeles Dodgers Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, the Cincinnati Reds are 18-19 ATS while the O/U is 17-20. On the other hand, the Los Angeles Dodgers are 13-23 ATS while the O/U is 19-16-1.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
When an injury-plagued team matches up with a struggling team, it can often lead to interesting results. I mean, if the Dodgers had all their weapons at full disposal, it would be a cinch in calling this matchup for the boys from the NL West. Nonetheless, this is not the case as the Dodgers have had to deal with a string of injuries lately while the Reds have not been able to garner up the consistency needed to be much of a competitor both within their division, much less within the league. The slogan, ‘anything can happen’, should be attached to the Sunday matchup amongst these squads.
Against The Spread Selection: Cincinnati Reds
My reason for the pick :
I am just not sure where the Dodgers are headed at this point in the season. They are already ranked 4th in the NL West only above the lowly San Diego Padres and have had to deal with numerous key injuries that has caused them to slide even more in the standings. It is for this reason that I happen to feel that it is a perfect time for the Reds to be matching up against the Dodgers. They are indeed vulnerable at this time and a desperate Reds team seeking a win will certainly take advantage of this in the finale.
