Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Houston Astros vs Los Angeles Angels
The Los Angeles Angels are set to open a 3 game home series at Angel Stadium against American League West foe in the Houston Astros, first pitch is set for 10:07 PM ET. This is a battle of the two top teams in the AL West, and before this series, these two teams met 3 times where Los Angeles won two of those matchups.
Houston Astros's Latest Performance :
Cole Continues Dominance
The Houston Astros are one of the most dangerous teams in the MLB because they boost the best rotation in baseball and have some really solid bats to go along with that which was shown in their 2017 World Championship year, but the Astros have only added more depth as they acquired Gerrit Cole this past offseason. Gerrit Cole joined a starting rotation that has Justin Verlander, Dallas Kuechel, Lance McCullers, and Charlie Morton but being a new place hasn’t phased Cole as he has a 4-1 record and a 1.43 ERA, but perhaps his most impressive stat is his strikeout count as he enters this series #1 in the MLB with 86. Gerrit Cole was able to continue his hot start to the season in a 5/9 start against the Oakland Athletics as he gave the Astros 6 solid innings giving up only 1 earned run while striking out 9 guys. The bullpen was impressive in Cole’s exit as the combination of Joe Smith, Will Harris, and Ken Giles gave the Astros 3 innings of hitless baseball. The bats of the Astros weren’t too shabby either as Max Stassi and Derek Fisher were able to hit back-to-back HRs in the 6th inning to propel the defending champions to a 4-1 victory. A good game was needed out of Derek Fisher as the former 1st round pick has struggled this season as he entered this 5/9 matchup batting only .190 on the season. The Astros don’t need to ask much out of their bats as their pitchers are doing most of the damage with their arms which will be vital come playoff time.
Los Angeles Angels's Latest Performance :
Solid Game From Ohtani
The Los Angeles Angels have regained their composure after a slight slump and sit on top of the AL West as they have won 7 of their last 10 games. The Angels were able to open their latest series against the Minnesota Twins with another solid game from their bats as they put up 7 runs on 12 hits. The two-way rookie sensation Shohei Ohtani continued his hot season from the plate as he led the team by going 2 for 4 with 1 HR and 2 RBIs. Ohtani was able to hit his 5th HR on the season but was also able to contribute to his team-high batting average of .354. As much as the success of Ohtani is nice to see the Angels were able to receive offense out of a guy that was supposed to contribute this season with that being Ian Kinsler. Kinsler entered this 5/10 matchup with a .191 batting average which is not what the Angels wished for as Kinsler has been one of the best hitting 2B in his 13-year career. Kinsler was able to go 3 for 4 from the plate and hit his 2nd HR of the season which is still a distance away from last years production where he hit 22 but its a start. The Angels had their best pitcher on the mound in Garrett Richards and although Richards performed below his usual norm he still had an okay game as he went 5.1 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 4 hits. Richards has the best record out of any Angels starter as he is 4-1 but his problem has been in the run department as he has a 4.08 ERA.

Against The Spread Selection: Houston Astros
My reason for the pick :
I am a big fan of backing the better pitcher and even though we do not know who is pitching for either team we have seen the significant differences in the two teams pitching staffs. The Angels are better than the Astros with their bats but not by much, and a really good pitching staff should cancel out a really good offense. The Astros have also been really good on the road as they have one of the best road records and the Angels have been mediocre at home. The defending champs take a little lead in the AL West with a win.
