St. Louis Cardinals vs San Diego Padres
The finale of a 4-game set between the visiting St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres will take place at PetCo Park in San Diego, California, on Sunday at 4:10 pm EST. The Cardinals are in the top spot within the NL Central while the Padres are 5th place in the NL West division. This will be the 1st matchup of the year amongst these two squads, however, the Cardinals taking 4 of the last 7 games, yet, have lost 2 of the last 3 at PetCo Park.
St. Louis Cardinals's Latest Performance :
After being winners of 5-straight games recently, the St. Louis Cardinals dropped 2 home games in a 2-game set against the surging Minnesota Twins on 5-8-2018. They are, nonetheless, winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-3-1. They had been on a roll lately in sweeping a 2-game set at home against the White Sox along with a 3-game home set against the Chicago Cubs on 5-6-2018. However, they happened upon a focused and offensive minded Twins team that outscored them in the set by a total of 13 runs to 1.
For the season, the Cardinals are averaging 4.35 runs per game (18th) with a team batting average of .228 (27th), 42 homers (14th), along with 17 stolen bases (16th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.39 (3rd) with 280 strikeouts (26th) and 15 quality starts on the year (17th).
Tommy Pham (.323 BA on 99 AB), Jose Martinez (.287 BA on 122 AB), Paul DeJong (.250 BA on 124 AB), and Yadier Molina (.272 BA on 114 AB) have been the most consistent batters at the plate for St. Louis this season. Michael Wacha (4-1) has 37.2 IP, 16 R, 36 H, 3 HR, 18 BB, and 31 SO along with an ERA of 3.35.
San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :
The Padres come into this matchup winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U has been 2-3. They recently lost a 3-game set on the road to the San Francisco Giants on 5-2-2018 before following up their lackluster play with a huge 3-game home series win over their divisions foe Los Angeles Dodgers on 5-6-2018. Nonetheless, they were not able to keep their momentum going in that they were dominated at home in yet another 3-game set versus the Washington Nationals on 5-8-2018. The Padres, however, were able to pick up the slim 2-1 win in game 3 and hope to continue this momentum into Sunday’s finale with a team that they have played well against at home.
For the season, San Diego averages 3.76 runs per game (27th) with a team batting average of .227 (28th), 34 homers (25th) and 20 stolen bases on the year (11th). Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.35 (21st) with 348 strikeouts (6th) and 11 quality starts thus far (28th).
Jose Pirela (.262 BA on 149 AB), Eric Hosmer (.271 BA on 129 AB), and Freddy Galvis (.228 BA on 126 AB) have been the few bright spots for this San Diego squad. Carlos Asuaje (.194 BA on 103 AB) has been relatively solid during the current campaign as well.
Joey Lucchesi (3-2) has been the most solid pitcher for the Padres this season as he has pitched 42.1 innings while allowing 16 runs on 37 hits, 6 homers, 14 walks, and 46 strikeouts while Tyson Ross (2-3) has pitched 41.2 innings while allowing 19 runs on 34 hits, 4 homers, 16 walks, and 46 strikeouts. Clayton Richard (1-5) has been very much inconsistent for the Padres this season, however, has pitched 45.2 innings while allowing 30 runs on 52 hits, 6 homers, 20 walks, and 40 strikeouts.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The all-important finale against these two teams will serve to either propel one team into possessing even more cushion between them and their division opponents, or, provide some much-needed confidence for the other as it desperately needs to win some games to increase their standing within the division. It is always important to ensure that one always finishes up on a strong note. With that being said, the Cardinals have played well lately, and will certainly be looking to perform well before they move on to the next set. On the other hand, the Padres will be looking to simply build upon every performance to garner up some type of momentum.
Against The Spread Selection: St. Louis Cardinals
My reason for the pick :
Despite their loss against a dangerous Minnesota Twins team, it is a fact that the Cardinals are also a dangerous team in their own right. Not only have they been able to win 5 of their last 7 games, they have been effective at closing teams out in the finale of the past 6 series (4-2). It is for this reason that I will side with the St. Louis Cardinals to play inspired ball on the road to get Sunday’s victory. They have a first place NL Central ranking to uphold, and I think that they will show and prove in game 3.
