Chicago Cubs vs Atlanta Braves

Game 2 of a 3-game set against the visiting Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves will take place at SunTrust Park in Atlanta, Georgia, on Tuesday at 7:35 pm EST.  The Chicago Cubs occupy the 4th place slot in the NL Central while the Atlanta Braves occupy 1st place within the NL East division.  This will be the 2nd meeting of the year amongst these two teams with both teams splitting a 3-game set on 4-15-2018 with the final game being postponed.

Chicago Cubs's Latest Performance :

The Braves come into this matchup winning 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-2.  They swept the New York Mets on 5-3-2018, however, were then swept at home by the San Francisco Giants on 5-6-2018.  The Braves did recover in a 2-game road set against the Rays as they would sweep the series on 5-9-2018 while also winning a 4-game road set in the following series against the Miami Marlins on 5-13-2018.

For the season, the Braves are averaging 5.46 runs per game (2nd) with a team batting average of .269 (1st), 49 homers (10th) along with 31 stolen bases (3rd).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.53 (7th) with 360 strikeouts (9th) along with 16 quality starts on the season (13th).

Freddie Freeman (.331 BA on 148 AB), Nick Markakis (.344 BA on 157 AB), Ryan Flaherty (.296 BA on 98 AB), and Ozzie Albies (.267 BA on 172 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Braves all season.  Dansby Swanson (.289 BA on 114 AB) and Ender Incarte (.272 BA on 162 AB) have also been consistent at the plate for the Braves.

Mike Foltynewicz (3-2, 46.2 IP, 18 R, 36 H, 4 HR, 19 BB, 47 SO, 3.21 ERA) and Brandon McCarthy (4-2, 40.1 IP, 27 R, 54 H, 7 HR, 15 BB, 30 SO, 5.58 ERA) have been bright spots on the mound for the Braves this year.  Sean Newcomb (4-1, 46.2 IP, 16 R, 32 H, 3 HR, 22 BB, 54 SO, 2.51 ERA) and Julio Teheran (3-1, 43 IP, 15 R, 32 H, 6 HR, 18 BB, 42 SO, 3.14 ERA have also been solid for Atlanta in 2018.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

The Cubs come into this game winners of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-2.  After a 3-game road sweep at the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals on 5-6-2018, the Cubs returned to form in a 3-game home set against the Miami Marlins on 5-9-2018 as they swept the series.  The Cubs carried this momentum into a 3-game home set against the Chicago White Sox as they won the series 2-games-to-1.

For the season, the Cubs are averaging 5.41 runs per game (4th) with a team batting average of .255 (10th), 44 homers (18th) along with 13 stolen bases (27th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.41 (5th) with 321 strikeouts (22nd) with 17 quality starts on the season, good for 10th in the MLB.

Kris Bryant (.285 BA on 123 AB), Kyle Schwarber (.255 BA on 106 AB), Javier Baez (.282 BA on 142 AB), and Jason Heyward (.227 BA on 97 AB) have spearheaded the Cubs offensive attack this year.  Wilson Contreras has also been critical to the scoring attack with a batting average of .275 on 131 at bats.

Jon Lester (3-1) has been solid this year pitching 44 innings while allowing 17 runs on 38 hits, 5 homer, 20 walks, and 36 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.66 while Tyler Chatwood (3-3) has pitched 37.2 innings while allowing 15 runs on 26 hits, 1 homer, 32 walks, and 38 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.35.  Kyle Hendricks (3-3) has pitched 50.2 innings while allowing 19 runs on 43 hits, 9 homers, 9 walks, and 38 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.20 for the season.

How Chicago Cubs & Atlanta Braves Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Braves are 23-16 ATS while the O/U is 19-17-3.  On the other hand, the Cubs are 19-18 ATS while the O/U is 16-20-1.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This matchup will certainly be competitive as you have 2 teams who will either be attempting to separate themselves from the rest of the teams within their division, or, trying to get a quality win in which to gain some confidence while increasing their position within their respective division.  I must say that while Atlanta has played well recently, the Cubs have certainly dominated this matchup in the past.  It will be interesting to see both these teams compete in game 2 after their recent outstanding play.

Against The Spread Selection: Chicago Cubs

My reason for the pick :

The Cubs are winners of 8 of the last 10 games against the Braves while taking the last 3 games in Atlanta, Georgia.  It is for this reason that I will expect the Cubs to fully understand the importance of this game and squeak out a huge victory.  Also, the Cubs have been slightly better ATS on the road (10-7) than the Braves have been at home (8-7).  With that being said, I am sold on Chicago getting the all-important win in Wednesday’s contest.
