Chicago White Sox vs Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pittsburgh Pirates are set to close out a 2 game home series at PNC Park against the Chicago White Sox in an interleague matchup, first pitch is set for 12:35 PM ET. Before this series, these two teams last met for a game 2 series on 5/8 and 5/9 where the Pirates were able to sweep the White Sox in their 2 game set.
Chicago White Sox's Latest Performance :
The Chicago White Sox have not been anything special this season which is no secret for the rebuilding Sox but they were finally able to reach double-digit wins after 37 games with a 5-3 win against crosstown rivals in the Chicago Cubs. The White Sox have struggled to find consistency with their pitchers all season as they rank in the bottom 3 in most major pitching statistical categories. The White Sox elected to close out their series against the Cubs with former 1st round pick Lucas Giolito who has played nothing like a first-round pick as the 23-year-old entered his 5/13 start with a 1-4 record and a 7.25 ERA. Giolito wasn’t dominant in his 5/13 start as the righty went 5.2 innings giving up 3 earned run as well as walking 7 guys, but Giolito was able to pick up his 2nd win of the season in his 8th start. The bullpen was dominant in Giolito’s exit as the combination of Jace Fry, Nate Jones, and Bruce Rondon gave the Sox 3.1 shutout innings where they only gave up 1 hit. The White Sox don’t have a true closer as they have given save opportunities to 7 different relievers this season, and Rondon was one of those 7 guys as the 27-year-old picked up his 1st save of the season. The offense was provided from their traditional source as slugger Matt Davidson went 2 for 3 with 1 HR and 2 RBIs. Davidson was able to connect on a ball in the top of the 2nd inning which helped contribute to his team-high in HRs as he now has 11 on the season. Davidson has been solid in his 2nd full-time season as the DH is on track to top his rookie year numbers where he hit 26 HRs and 68 RBIs.
Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :
Nova Roughed Up
The Pittsburgh Pirates are stuck in a tight NL Central race as the top 4 teams in the division are only a game or less out of 1st place, and the Pirates are looking to end the season as the top team which is something that has not been done for this organization since 1992 when the Pirates were in the NL East. The Pirates did not enter this series on the note they wanted to as they were shutout against the San Francisco Giants, 5-0. The Pirates started their 9-year veteran Ivan Nova who has not been very good this season as the right-hander enters this series with a 2-3 record and a 5.01 ERA. Nova was roughed up against the San Francisco Giants who rank in the bottom 10 in runs scored this season, but this 5/13 matchup tells us different as the Giants were able to record 4 runs on 8 hits off Nova. One positive out of the pitching from the Pirates was a solid game out of the now converted reliever Tyler Glasnow who has been inconsistent in his 2nd season. Glasnow has started in 17 games in his short career but after going 2-7 with a 7.69 ERA Clint Hurdle prompted the move to send Glasnow to the bullpen. Glasnow entered his 5/13 matchup with a 6.75 ERA but the 24-year-old showed the Pirates he has potential as he gave them 2 shutout innings of work while striking out 3 guys in the process. The Pirates were not able to get a run across on the 7 hits they had as their lineup left 6 guys in scoring position but in the defense of the Pirates, 2 of those runners were left on from pitcher Ivan Nova who has only recorded 5 hits in 108 ABs.

Against The Spread Selection: Pittsburgh Pirates
My reason for the pick :
The Pittsburgh Pirates have been one of those sneaky good teams as they have used a combination of solid role players to keep themselves relevant in the NL Central divisional race. The White Sox enjoyed a good game from their pitching staff to close out their series against the Cubs but that was rare as the pitching staff ranks dead last in ERA and that won’t play well in the hands of the Sox as the Pirates have a top 5 offense. Taillon looked good before he left his last start with a cut on his throwing hand while Fulmer got slashed in his last go around. The Pirates know they need to take advantage of winnable games if they want a shot at making the postseason and they will do just that in this matchup.
