Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Chicago Cubs vs Atlanta Braves

The Braves will welcome back the Cubs to SunTrust Park to play game 3 in the 4 game series. This is the second meeting for these two teams as the first meeting ended up in a split.

Chicago Cubs 's Latest Performance :

The Cubs weren’t able to win the series opener as they lost in a very tight contest. The Cubs drop to 21-17 dropping them into 4th in the NL Central division. The thing about the Central division is that all the teams are equally matched and the leader Brewers are only ahead by 4 wins. The Cubs drop to 8-9 on the road. They have finally reached 200 runs this season, they are ranked 7th in the Major when it comes to scoring. The Cubs are also 5th in pitching this season despite the bad performance by Quintana who gave up three home runs and was tagged for six runs over 4 2/3 frames.

Kris Bryant went 1 for 5 with a solo homer and drove in 2 RBIs for the Cubs. He was unfortunate that his last ball did not go out of the park but it ended up in the Braves outfielder.  He will bounce back as he will have a better pitcher controlling the mound this time around so his efforts won’t go to waste. He is now slashing .281/.415/.586 with 21 RBIs and 8 homers this season.

Albert Almora JR. struck a two-run homer in the bottom of the 2nd inning. He finished the game 3 for 4. He got the start in this one against a righty and took Julio Teheran deep in his first plate appearance. He should continue to play well as this series progresses. He is now slashing .298/.354/.423 with 10 RBIs and 2 homers.

Pitching for the Cubs will be Jon Lester. He gave up one run over 5 2/3 in his last outing vs. the White Sox, his fourth start this season in which he’s given up one or zero earned runs. He’s 6-2 with a 2.47 ERA in nine career starts vs. the Braves.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

The Braves were able to win the series opener against the Cubs as they extended their lead on top of the NL East division. The Braves have finally bounced back after losing to the Giants in a series sweep, they have won two series in a row and 3 straight games. The Braves who are supposed to be rebuilding this year have surprised a lot of teams, they have become one of the better teams on the road but they still haven’t found a groove at home they have a home record of 8-7. The Braves are 3rd best in scoring with 213 runs scored this season and 7th in pitching with an ERA of 3.53.

Ozzie Albies snapped his 0-12 streak as he struck his 13th home run of the season tied with Harper for the most homer in the NL, in the first inning on the first pitch, he has been on a tear for the Braves this season. He has gone deep three times over his last five games. He is slashing .277/.312/.588 with 31 RBIs this season.

Atlanta Braves have plenty of young talent getting a veteran homerun hitter like Bautista is going to help them towards the end of the season. Bautista struck a go-ahead three-run home run in the fifth inning. He has now gone deep in consecutive starts, he is the veteran that this Brave team is looking for, look for his numbers to improve in the next few games. Flowers went 2 for 2 with a 2 run homer and three walks, he has been playing well since coming back from injury.

Pitching for the Braves will be Mike Soroka. He allowed five runs but only one earned over 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision Saturday against the Marlins. He now has a 3.68 ERA and 15/4 K/BB ratio. This will be the fourth career start.

Against The Spread Selection: Chicago Cubs

My reason for the pick :

Chicago Cubs to steal game 3 from the Braves, as Lester will improve his impressive record against the Braves to 7-2. The Cubs will show us why pitching is one of the most important elements in baseball as Lester should set the tone early for the Cubs and win game 3 on the road.

Betting trends for Chicago Cubs :

  • Cubs are 4-1 in their last 5 when their opponent allows 5 runs or more in their previous game.

Betting trends for Atlanta Braves:

  • Braves are 15-6 in their last 21 vs. a team with a winning record.
