Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Philadelphia Phillies vs St. Louis Cardinals
The Cards will welcome the Phillies to Busch Stadium as both teams will go head to head in a four-game series. The Cards are 2nd in the NL Central while the Phillies are second in the NL East. Both teams are looking for an opportunity to grab the top spot in their respective divisions. This will be the first meeting between these two teams.
Philadelphia Phillies's Latest Performance :
The Phillies have now won 5 of their last 6 games as they will hit the road to play the Cardinals. The Phillies are 7-10 on the road this season. The Phillies are a great home team no doubt about that but they will have to fix their struggles on the road as the season progresses. Coming into this series the Phillies are 11th in batting scoring 184 runs this season and 6th best in pitching with a 3.44 ERA. To fix the team road struggles the players must shift their mindset don’t allow the environment to affect their performance this is simply done by a mental shift. The Phillies have a record of 23-16, they are playing in a very competitive division as they are only one game behind for the top spot in the division. If the Phillies are able to put together a series of wins they might find themselves sitting on top of the division.
Maikel Franco is the team leader in RBIs at 28 his last RBIs came on May 9th when the team beat the Giants, he does not have much of an impact since then. He is hoping he will be able to pick things up after a hot start to the season. When he is playing well Phillies end up in the win column. He is slashing .274/.311/.500 with 7 homers this season.
Carlos Santana went 2-for-3 with a homer and two runs scored, the homer is the seventh of the season for Santana. The hits are starting to fall for Santana, and his .196/.306/.436 line on the season. I expect to have a good game against the Cards.
Pitching for the Phillies is Jake Arrieta. He has been strong in his last two outings and had nothing to show for it as the bullpen destroyed his wins at Washington on May 6 and at home vs. the Mets Friday. Arrieta is 8-4 with a 2.27 ERA in 17 career starts vs. the Cardinals.
St. Louis Cardinals's Latest Performance :
The Cardinals will be back at Busch Stadium for a 7 game homestand beginning Friday. The homestand opens with a two-game series against the Twins. The Cards are 12-7 when playing at home this season, they are only 3 wins away for the top spot in the NL Central. The Cards weren’t able to close out the Padres instead they had to settle for a split. The Cards are having trouble scoring runs this season as they are ranked 22nd in the Major scoring only 163 runs this season. Over the last 6 games, the Cards were able to put up 16 runs including one shutout loss to the Twins.
Harrison Bader is one of the only Cardinals able to get anything going offensively, The homer was his third of the year to go with four stolen bases in 28 games. His defensive ability is keeping him in the rotation, and Bader is showing a little bit at the dish as well, batting .258/.370/.435 on the year. The Cards will need his offensive production when the Phillies come to visit. The Cards might adjust their line up to improve fix their scoring woes against the Phillies, it is the batting coach duty to mix and match line-ups until they have found the winning solution that works for the team. The Cards still have plenty of time to figure that out since it is still early in the season and it will only take a few games to see who fits where. This is where their impressive pitching will be able to buy them some time, the Cards are 3rd best in pitching this season.
Pitching for the Cards at home will be Michael Wacha earned a tough no-decision on Saturday while allowing one run in six innings on Saturday against the Padres. He is 4-1 on the season with a 3.09 ERA to go along with 36 strikeouts in 43 2/3 innings.
How Philadelphia Phillies & St. Louis Cardinals Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Cardinals are 16-5 in their last 21 when their opponent scores 2 runs or less in their previous game.
Phillies are 8-2 in their last 10 when their opponent scores 5 runs or more in their previous game.
Against The Spread Selection: Philadelphia Phillies
My reason for the pick :
The Phillies will win on the road against the Cards, despite the Cards having a better home record. The only differences this time around is that Arrieta is controlling the mound for the Phillies and should be able to put up a masterful pitching performance as he will improve his personal record to 9-4 when he plays against the Cards.
Phillies to win on the Road over the Cards.
