The Padres come into this matchup winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U has been 1-4.  Recently, the Padres picked up a huge series win over their divisions foe Los Angeles Dodgers in a 3-game home set on 5-6-2018.  They preceded to lose a 3-game home set versus the Nationals on 5-9-2018 while tying the St. Louis Cardinals in the following 4-game home set 2-games-to-2 on 5-13-2018.

Jose Pirela (.271 BA on 166 AB), Eric Hosmer (.262 BA on 145 AB), and Freddy Galvis (.223 BA on 148 AB) have been the few bright spots for this San Diego squad.  Carlos Asuaje (.198 BA on 106 AB) has also pitvotal to the Padres offense as well.

Joey Lucchesi (3-2) has been the most solid pitcher for the Padres this season as he has pitched 42.1 innings while allowing 16 runs on 37 hits, 6 homers, 14 walks, and 46 strikeouts while Tyson Ross (2-3) has pitched 47.2 innings while allowing 20 runs on 37 hits, 4 homers, 18 walks, and 53 strikeouts.  Clayton Richard (2-5) has been very much inconsistent for the Padres this season, however, has pitched 53.2 innings while allowing 32 runs on 57 hits, 6 homers, 21 walks, and 50 strikeouts.

Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :

The Pittsburgh Pirates have won 5 of their last 7 games to where the O/U was 4-1-1.  After a 4-game road sweep to the Washington Nationals on 5-3-2018, the Pirates went on to win a 3-game road set versus the Brewers while sweeping a 2-game set versus the White Sox on 5-9-2018.  They followed this up with a 3-game home series win versus the struggling San Francisco Giants on 5-13-2018.

For the season, the Pittsburgh Pirates average 5.02 runs per game (6th) with a team batting average of .261 (5th), 48 homers (14th) along with 17 stolen bases (20th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.18 (15th) with 329 strikeouts (19th) along with 17 quality starts on the year (11th).

Against The Spread Selection: Pittsburgh Pirates

My reason for the pick :

While the Padres have picked up some wins here and there, I continue to feel as if the Pirates are the better team in this contest.  Also, when I consider that the Padres are a mere 6-9 (ML) away from PetCo Park this year as opposed to the Pirates being 12-6 (ML) at home in 2018, there is even more reason to back the Pirates in what will be an interesting game 1, thus setting the pace for the remainder of the series.
