Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Miami Marlins vs Atlanta Braves

Game 1 of a 3-game set between the visiting Miami Marlins and the Atlanta Braves will take place on Friday night at SunTrust Park in Atlanta, Georgia, beginning at 7:35 pm EST.  The Braves currently occupy the top spot within the NL East division while the Marlins occupy the last place slot in the division.  This will be the 2nd series of the year amongst these teams with the Braves taking 3 of 4 earlier this season at Marlins Park.

Miami Marlins's Latest Performance :

The Marlins had recently won a 3-game set against the Cincinnati Reds on 5-6-2018, however, were blasted on the road by the Chicago Cubs in a 3-game sweep on 5-9-2018.  In addition, the Marlins performed miserably against the Braves on 5-13-2018, ultimately losing the 3-game home set as well.

For the season, the Marlins average 3.45 runs per game (30th) with a team batting average of .227 (29th), 31 homers (30th) along with 9 stolen bases (29th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 5.12 (28th) with 352 strikeouts (12th) along with 12 quality starts (27th).

Starlin Castro (.289 BA on 152 AB), Brian Anderson (.262 BA on 145 AB), and Justin Bour (.235 BA on 115 AB) have been the offensive superstars for the Marlins this year.  Derek Dietrich (.243 BA on 148 AB) and Miguel Rojas (.260 BA on 146 AB) have also been critical components to the Miami offensive attack.

The Marlin pitching staff has been very inconsistent this year, however, Jarlin Garcia (1-1, 43 IP, 16 R, 28 H, 8 HR, 17 BB, 30 SO, 3.14 ERA) and Jose Urena (0-6, 51.1 IP, 26 R, 51 H, 5 HR, 13 BB, 43 SO, 4.38 ERA) have pitched the most inning for the Marlins this year.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

The Braves were recently swept at home by the San Francisco Giants on 5-6-2018; However, they recovered well by sweeping a 2-game set at home versus the Rays on 5-9-2018.  Atlanta also performed well in a 4-game set versus the Marlins as they won the series 3-games-to-1 on 5-13-2018.  This momentum carried into their following series against the Chicago Cubs as the Braves got the 6-5 road win on 5-14-2018.

For the season, the Braves are averaging 5.48 runs per game (2nd) with a team batting average of .269 (1st), 52 homers (9th) along with 32 stolen bases (2nd).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.57 (8th) with 362 strikeouts (9th) along with 16 quality starts on the season (16th).

Freddie Freeman (.325 BA on 151 AB), Nick Markakis (.346 BA on 162 AB), Ryan Flaherty (.293 BA on 99 AB), and Ozzie Albies (.277 BA on 177 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Braves all season.  Dansby Swanson (.289 BA on 114 AB) and Ender Incarte (.263 BA on 167 AB) have also been consistent at the plate for the Braves.

Mike Foltynewicz (3-2, 42 IP, 18 R, 36 H, 4 HR, 19 BB, 47 SO, 3.21 ERA) and Brandon McCarthy (4-2, 40.1 IP, 27 R, 54 H, 7 HR, 15 BB, 30 SO, 5.58 ERA) have been bright spots on the mound for the Braves this year.  Sean Newcomb (4-1, 46.2 IP, 16 R, 32 H, 3 HR, 22 BB, 54 SO, 2.51 ERA) and Julio Teheran (4-1, 49 IP, 19 R, 36 H, 8 HR, 21 BB, 43 SO, 3.49 ERA have also been solid for Atlanta in 2018.

How Miami Marlins & Atlanta Braves Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Marlins are 19-21 ATS while the O/U is 20-20.  On the other hand, the Braves are 24-16 ATS while the O/U is 20-17-3.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This matchup will be one that will be interesting.  On one hand, you have the Braves who have been stellar lately, and the Marlins who have lost 6 of their last 7 games.  Atlanta will be facing a team in the Marlins who are only 6-12 (ML) on the road this season.  In addition to this, the Braves will also look to exploit Miami’s pitching staff who has been atrocious this year.  Miami, on the other hand, simply will look to somehow right the ship and pick up some much-needed wins in which to get back into the race within the NL East division.

Against The Spread Selection: Atlanta Braves

My reason for the pick :

The Braves recently demolished the Marlins at Marlins Park, and I expect them to perform very well in this matchup as well.  While the Braves are slightly above .500 at SunTrust Park, they really seem to have the Marlins number, judging from past results.  The Marlins are reeling at this point in the season, and a matchup with a surging Braves team will only serve to further their frustration.  Again, expect the Braves to shine in this contest on Friday.
