San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :

Almost Another No-No

The San Diego Padres may not have the best record in the MLB or any chance at making the playoffs, but Padres GM A.J. Preller has to be satisfied with the production out of their young guys in both the pitching and hitting aspect, and not to mention he has a ton of players in the farm system who will make a difference when they are ready. There is no such category for almost No-hitters but if there was the Padres would lead that category as Tyson Ross lost one in the 8th inning on 4/20 and former first-round pick Jordan Lyles also almost had one on 5/15 but his too was also spoiled in the 8th inning. Lyles has been a reliever most of the season as he has seen action in 13 games out of the bullpen, but Lyles has looked dominant in his first 2 starts of 2018. Jordan Lyles started on 5/15 against the Colorado Rockies and he looked great as he brought a no-hitter into the 8th inning which was eventually spoiled, but that is not to take away anything from Lyles as he finished the game with 10 strikeouts and only gave up one hit. Relievers Kirby Yates and Brad Hand were able to feed off Lyles good game as the duo went the remainder of the game without giving up a hit. The Padres were also able to receive enough production from two of their best hitters in Christian Villanueva and Eric Hosmer who both had 2-run HRs. Villanueva has endured a rookie slump as the 3B has only recorded 5 hits in his last 53 ABs but hopefully, his 2-run HR gets the rookie back on track as Villanueva leads the team in HRs with 10.

Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :

Pirates Get It Done

The Pittsburgh Pirates are one of the hottest teams in baseball as they have been in solid form with 7 wins in their last 10 outings, and they continued their hot streak with a solid outing from both their pitchers and their bats as they opened their series against the White Sox with a 7-0 win. With their win in their home-opener against the White Sox, the Pirates were able to move within a game of the Milwaukee Brewers who are currently the top team in the NL Central. The Pittsburgh Pirates elected to start their 2nd-year pitcher Trevor Williams who has been great this season and he continued his hot roll with a 7 inning shutout where he struck out 6 guys in a 5/15 matchup. Willimas has been much improved from his rookie season where he went 7-9 with a 4.07 ERA as he is now 5-2 with a 2.72 ERA after his first 9 starts. The Pirates were able to bring in two of their best relievers in Kyle Crick and Richard Rodriquez who have a combined 2.17 ERA through 26 innings, and they shut the door on the White Sox as they struck out 3 guys in the final 2 innings. The Pirates were effective with their bats as they brought in 7 runs on 10 hits with 7 of those hits being extra bases. The Pirates were led by their 25-year-old 1B Josh Bell who went 2 for 4 from the plate with both of his hits being RBI doubles as he racked up a total of 3 in the game which leaves him at 24 RBIs on the season. If the Pirates can continue getting good pitching out of their starters they should continue to have success as their offense is one of the best in the MLB.

Against The Spread Selection: Pittsburgh Pirates

My reason for the pick :

We talked about the almost no-hitter that Tyson Ross had and even though he has been pretty solid in 2018 (3.40 ERA) you can see the support he receives from his team as the righty has a losing record. The Pirates have a solid offense who can put up runs and if they can squeeze out 3 or more off Ross they have a great shot at winning despite Nova’s struggles as the Padres don’t have the offense to match the Pirates. Pittsburgh has also been very good at home this season and with them being in good form as of recent I trust them to win a lot more than the last place Padres.

Betting trends for San Diego Padres:

Betting trends for Pittsburgh Pirates:

  • Pittsburgh is 20-14 against right-handed pitchers this season.
