Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Chicago Cubs vs Cincinnati Reds
The Cubs will hit the road as they will play the Red at the Great American Ball Park in game number 2. This will be the second meeting between the two teams as the Reds took the first series by a single run. The second game was suspended. This time around they will be able to play in a four-game series. The Cubs are 4th while the Reds are 5th in the NL Central division.
Chicago Cubs's Latest Performance :
The Cubs have now won 7 of their last 9 games including a sweep against the White Sox, the Cubs are currently on a 7 game road trip as they prepare to take on fellow NL Central Reds in a 4 game series. The Cubs are 9-10 when playing on the road this season, during the last couple of games the Cubs were matched up against a very strong Brave team they were able to win one game as they scored 2 runs in the 9th inning to secure the victory. The Cubs have a record of 22-18 they are currently 4th in the NL Central division every game is important for the Cubs and playing the last place Reds would certainly benefit the Cubs because they will have a chance to climb up the standings if they are able to pull up a string of wins.
Kris Bryant continues the impressive hitting streak he is now up to 3, he went 3-for-4 and drove in a run. He plated the Cubs’ only run of the game by driving in Ian Happ with a single in the fifth inning. He also doubled in the ballgame and is now slashing .301/.429/.596 with eight homers, 22 RBI and 27 runs scored on the season. I expect him to have a really solid batting performance against the Reds.
I expect Javier Baez to return to his own self in the Red series, after starting the season out on fire he has cooled down significantly his last RBI came on May 11th against the White Sox Baez simply has to play better if the Cubs wants to make a late push into the postseason. His line this season is .266/.301/.571 with 36 RBIs and a whopping 10 homer including 5 stolen base this season.
Pitching for the Cubs will be Jose Quintana. He surrendered three home runs and was tagged for six runs over 4 2/3 frames in Monday’s loss to the Braves. He was matched up against a very strong Brave team it would be a great chance for Jose to regain his confidence back as the Cubs hit the road to play the Reds.
Cincinnati Reds's Latest Performance :
The Reds will be back at Great American Ball Park for a 7 game homestand beginning Saturday. The homestand opens with a four-game series against the Cubs. The Reds have one of the worst home records at 6-15 this season. They were able to prevent themselves from getting swept by the Pirates by winning the series finale game. The Reds bullpen played great as they worked a two scoreless inning allowing only two hits. It is the first time since 2011 the Reds went 5-2 on a West Coast road trip, they swept the Dodgers and dropped 2 against the Giants. They are hoping that the team can replicate this performance when they play the Cubs and use this West Coast road trip as a momentum builder down the stretch.
Adam Duvall did it all for the Reds offensively and defensively he went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer. He made an impressive catch in the first inning which allowed the Giants to only have a base hit. His homer came in the top of the first off of Andrew Suarez, and it’s the eighth of the season. He is slashing .191/.277/.418 although his line isn’t that appealing he’s homered in back-to-back games.
Scooter Gennett went 2-for-4 with a homer he also scored 2 runs. It was his 2nd solo homer of the year and 7 homers in total this season. His season line is now up to .327/.368/.563 with 25 RBI. With numbers like these Gennett is on pace to have another breakout season.
Pitching for the Reds in Game 2 will be Tyler Mahle. He took a loss on Tuesday by allowing four runs over 3 1/3 innings against the Giants. He allowed seven hits, and he walked one while striking out two. His ERA now sits at 4.34 to go along with a 1.34 WHIP on the 2018 season.
