Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

San Diego Padres vs Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates will welcome the Padres to the PNC Park as the two teams will go head to head in a 4 games series. The Pirates are looking to prolong their position on top of the NL Central while the Padres are now 4th in the NL West.

San Diego Padres 's Latest Performance :

The Padres are coming off an impressive shutout victory against the Rockies at home that win put them into 4th place in the NL West division and sending the Dodgers into last. They will now prepare themselves for a 10 game road trip, the Padres are 6-9 on the road this season, first up they play the Pirates in a 4 game series. It has been a pretty bad season for the Padres thus far they have a record of 17-27. Jordan Lyles had himself a career night he struck out 10 batters over 7 1/3 scoreless innings Tuesday in the Padres’ 4-0 blanking of the Rockies. Lyles carried a perfect game into the top of the eighth inning, but Trevor Story hit a one-out single.

Eric Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer. Hosmer hit that two-run shot off German Marquez in the bottom of the first inning to give San Diego an early lead. The first baseman then added a single in the bottom of the third. He’s batting .270/.369/.487 with 6 home runs and 16 RBI in 40 games this season.

Christian Villanueva finished 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, he finally got his 10th homer of the season in 36 games this season. The night before he finally put an end to his 0 for 37 hitting drought. He will look to build on this hitting spree and try to avoid another drought from happening. He is slashing .238/.316/.525 this season. I expect him to play well on the road against the Pirates.

Pitching for the Padres will be Clayton Richard. He became the first pitcher to record back-to-back eight-inning starts for the Padres since Andrew Cashner in 2014. Richard has bounced back from a rough month with 18 K’s in those last two outings. He is 2-5 on the season with a 5.20 ERA, he has been playing much better striking out 10 batter which was his highest this season.

Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :

The Pirates are capping off their 9 game homestand as they ready to face the Padres. They are the best team in the NL Central with a record of 25-17. The Pirates are 14-6 when playing at home this year. The Pirates are dealing with injuries Marte (oblique) and Cervelli (forearm) some teams might go downhill if their key players get injured but that is not the case for the Pirates as they will always have someone ready to play framing it as “next man up”. The Pirates have now won seven of its past eight games. The Pirates have now spent nearly a month on top of the NL Central division and they are planning to stay there longer when the Padres come to visit.

Josh Bell doubled twice and drove in three runs, he is now 12 for 27 with 10 RBIs in his career as a pinch hitter, he is 3 for 3 as a pinch hitter this season. Bell plated a couple runs in the first inning with a double and added another RBI two-bagger in the second. He still has just three home runs on the season, but Bell is batting .333 so far expect his numbers to double towards the end of May.

Sean Rodriguez contributed a two-RBI double, his double in the second inning put two batters on base to get the scoring going for the Pirates. Rodriguez got the start in center field as he will be the one to fill in for Marte while he out dealing with his injury. His line this season is .171/.293/.357  his numbers will improve because of more playing time. He has 9 RBIs and 3 homers this season.

Pitching for the Pirates will be Ivan Nova. He allowed four runs over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Giants on Sunday. He is now 2-3 with a 5.01 ERA and 1.35 WHIP through nine starts this year as he will look to redeem himself when he plays against the Padres.

Against The Spread Selection: Pittsburgh Pirates

My reason for the pick :

The NL Central leaders Pirates will win easily at home over the Padres, they have a home record of 14-6 for a reason. The Pirates will prove to be too strong for the Padres to handle. The Pirates are the 5th best scoring team in the Major so I guarantee you that they will put plenty of runs on the board at home.
