The Chicago White Sox are set to open another home series at Guaranteed Rate Field as they will host American League foe in the Baltimore Orioles for game 1 of a 4 game set, first pitch is slated for 8:10 PM ET. Baltimore Orioles's Latest Performance :

Bats Effective In W

The Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Sox are already separated by 15.5 games in the standings as the Orioles early season struggles dug them deep into the AL East standings, but when they are able to receive production from the guys who are expected to produce we see the potential this team has. The Orioles were able to open their recent series against the Boston Red Sox on a high note as they were able to win 7-4 behind effective bats and solid bullpen pitching. The Orioles elected to start 30-year-old Alex Cobb who is currently in his first season in Baltimore but his season hasn’t been as hoped for. The right-handed starter enters this series with a 1-5 record and a 6.56 ERA as he has gotten shelled all season, and although his outing against the Red Sox wasn’t amazing it was much improved. Cobb was able to give the Orioles 6.1 innings where he gave up 3 earned runs on 10 hits which all things considered isn’t shabby against one of the best offenses in baseball. The bullpen was very effective in securing Cobb’s first win of the season as the combination of Mychal Givens, Richard Bleier, and Brad Brach went the remainder of the way without picking up an earned run. The offense was what really won the game for this struggling ballclub as they were able to bring across 7 runs on 10 hits with every single run coming from the 3-6 hitters. The Orioles were once again led by their star SS Manny Machado as the 25-year-old was able to go 3 for 5 from the plate with 2 RBIs. Machado has been most of the offense all year long for the Orioles as he currently leads this team in every major statistical category with 14 HRs, 42 RBIs, and a .347 batting average.

Chicago White Sox's Latest Performance :

Fulmer Roughed Up

The Chicago White Sox enter this series in the bottom 3 of both team ERA and scoring which has resulted in one of the worst seasons in White Sox history, and in their 5/18 matchup against the Texas Rangers, it became apparent what direction this team is truly going towards. The White Sox elected to start former first-round pick Carson Fulmer who has been a complete disappointment in his first full year in the majors. Fulmer enters this series with a 2-4 record and even worse an 8.07 ERA which becomes understandable given his recent starts. Fulmer’s 8th start of the season wasn’t pretty as the right-handed starter got roughed up for 8 earned runs on 3 hits in only 2 innings of work. Fulmer constantly found himself putting runners on base whether it was via hit or via walk (5 BBs) which is the main contributor to him giving up a ton of runs. The bullpen was decent enough to stop the bleeding especially rookie Aaron Bummer who struck out 2 guys in 2 shutout innings. The White Sox offense wasn’t terrible as they were able to bring in 5 runs on 9 hits which is normally solid but considering the state of their pitching staff the runs were not enough help. The White Sox were led by their 1B Jose Abreu as the 31-year-old went 2 for 4 from the plate with 2 RBIs. Abreu was able to record 2 doubles which were his 10 & 11th of the season and both hits resulted in runs coming across the plate to put his season total at 21.

Against The Spread Selection: Baltimore Orioles

My reason for the pick :

The Orioles and White Sox are not teams that I would consistently put my money on but when these two teams go head to head with similar statistics you have to look at the roster makeup. The Orioles still contain some key pieces to their postseason pushes in previous years and they host one of the best teams in baseball with Manny Machado. The pitching matchup has to fall in favor of the Orioles as Cashner has been slightly better over his lengthy career and although he is 1-5 this season it has been more so due to the inconsistency of offensive production. Baltimore has trended in a slightly better direction than the young White Sox which is the main reason I am backing them.

Betting trends for Baltimore Orioles:

  • Baltimore is 6-10 against the AL Central this season.

  • The over is 12-9 on the road this season.

Betting trends for Chicago White Sox:

  • Chicago is 9-21 with no rest this season.

  • The over is 15-12-2 after a loss this season.
