Boston Red Sox's Latest Performance :

Solid Game From Pitchers

The Boston Red Sox have one of the best starting rotations in baseball as the 5 starters have combined for a 23-7 record and 5/20 was a prime example of the Red Sox deep rotation as the #5 starter Eduardo Rodriquez was able to give another great outing. Rodriquez has been in the MLB for 4 years but he has been nothing spectacular over the first 3 seasons as he went a combined 19-20 with a 4.24 ERA but 2018 has been solid for the left-handed pitcher as he has gone 4-1 with a 4.13 ERA. Rodriquez continued his hot start to 2018 in his 9th start of the season as the 25-year-old gave the Red Sox 5.2 shutout innings where he struck out 7 batters in the process. The bullpen was also very solid in Rodriquez’s exit as the combination of Heath Hembree, Bobby Poyner, and Brian Johnson gave the Red Sox 3.1 innings of shutout baseball where they struck out 3 guys. Rookie Bobby Poyner has been solid in his debut in the Majors as the left-handed reliever has a 1.86 ERA through his first 9 appearances. The Red Sox bats were able to do just enough in securing another Red Sox win as they were able to bring across 5 runs on 12 hits. J.D. Martinez has continued to put himself on the radar of baseball fans as the newly acquired OF went 2 for 4 from the plate with 3 RBIs. Martinez was able to connect for 2 HRs in the bottom of the 2nd and 5th innings to get his season total to 15 which isn’t only the best on the Red Sox but in the MLB.

Tampa Bay Rays's Latest Performance :

Untraditional Start

The Tampa Bay Rays have been one of the best teams in the MLB as of recent as they have won 7 of their last 10 matchups to propel themselves into the third spot of the AL East which is arguably the best division in baseball. Kevin Cash and management have not figured out a long-term solution for the back-end of the starting rotation which has prompted him to go to his bullpen to give the Rays a small amount of production at a time. Cash elected to start reliever Sergio Romo in an untraditional way as he started his 2nd consecutive game in back-to-back games which are his only 2 starts of his lengthy career. Romo was solid in the 1.1 innings he appeared in as the right-handed reliever struck out 3 guys. The Rays going the untraditional route has also caused some problems as they have had to dig deep into their bullpen and 5/20 was a prime example of that as rookie Anthony Banda saw 3.1 innings of play. Banda wasn’t good in the final 3.1 innings as the left-handed youngster gave up 2 earned runs which has contributed to his 5.40 ERA. The Rays recorded 7 hits on the hitting end of things but they were only able to bring 2 guys across which proved to not be enough. Johnny Field was solid for the Rays at the #9 spot in the batting order as the rookie was able to go 2 for 4 from the plate with 2 RBIs. Field’s was able to connect on the first pitch he saw in the top of the 3rd inning to give him his 4th HR of his young MLB career.

Against The Spread Selection: Boston Red Sox

My reason for the pick :

Chris Archer and David Price have both endured average seasons but as we see over the course of the last outings for both these pitchers they are starting to trend in the right direction. Given the solid pitching matchup we have in this matchup these two pitchers will cancel each other out which will leave me to believe to side with the better offense and the better team which happens to be the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox have their own leaderboard as Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez have combined for 30 HRs and with the small ballpark like Tropicana Field, these two sluggers should have no problem teeing off on the road. Boston wins in Tampa.
