Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Cleveland Indians vs Chicago Cubs

Game 2 of the 2-game set versus the visiting Cleveland Indians and the Chicago Cubs will begin on Tuesday night at 7:05 pm EST at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois.  The Indians are currently in 1st place within the AL Central while the Cubs are in 3rd place within the NL Central division.  This will be the 2nd meeting of the year between these squads as both teams split a 2-game series in Cleveland earlier in the season.

Cleveland Indians's Latest Performance :

The Cleveland Indians come into this matchup losers of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-3.  Recently, the Indians would tie a 2-game road set versus the Milwaukee Brewers on 5-9-2018.  While they would rebound with a series win over the Royals in a 3-game home set on 5-13-2018, they would lose a 3-game road set to the Detroit Tigers on 5-16-2018.  Cleveland most recently lost a 3-game road set to the Houston Astros on 5-20-2018.  As stated before, the Indians certainly need to get back to solid, timely hitting along with lock down pitching performances from their deep and talented pitching staff going forward.

For the season, the Indians are averaging 4.76 runs per game (7th) with a team batting average of .245 (14th), 67 homers (2nd) along with 25 stolen bases (12th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.06 (13th) with 392 strikeouts (16th), along with 31 quality starts, good for 2nd in the MLB.

Jose Ramirez (.295 BA on 173 AB) and Francisco Lindor (.298 BA on 188 AB) have spearheaded the Indians offensive attack this season.  Yonder Alonso (.213 BA on 150 AB) and Edwin Encarnacion (.212 BA on 156 AB) have struggled a bit, yet, continue to be offensive leaders for the Indians.  Jason Kipnis (.176 BA on 170 AB) has also struggled thus far in the young season.

The Indians also possesses a host of solid pitchers such as Corey Kluber (7-2, 72.1 IP, 21 R, 51 H, 11 HR, 10 BB, 71 SO, 2.36 ERA) and Trevor Bauer (3-3, 59 IP, 20 R, 45 H, 3 HR, 21 BB, 67 SO, 2.59 ERA) have been the most consistent thus far.  Mike Clevenger (3-1, 59.2 IP, 19 R, 51 H, 3 HR, 18 BB, 50 SO, 2.87 ERA) and Carlos Carrasco (5-3, 66.2 IP, 28 R, 57 H, 8 HR, 14 BB, 63 SO, 3.64 ERA) have been very solid in their own right thus far in the season and are bright spots for Cleveland’s pitching staff.

Chicago Cubs's Latest Performance :

The Cubs come into this game winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-3-1.  After winning a 3-game home set against the Chicago White Sox on 5-13-2018, the Cubs would drop a game to the Atlanta Braves on 5-14-2018 by a 6-5 score.  They would rekindle their matchup with the Braves on the road in a 3-game set to which they would get the tie (with game 3 being postponed due to weather conditions).  The Cubs most recently won a 4-game road set against the lowly Cincinnati Reds on 5-20-2018.

For the season, the Cubs are averaging 5.39 runs per game (3rd) with a team batting average of .259 (6th), 51 homers (16th) along with 15 stolen bases (27th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.28 (2nd) with 392 strikeouts (15th) with 20 quality starts on the season, good for 10th in the MLB.

Kris Bryant (.305 BA on 171 AB), Kyle Schwarber (.248 BA on 125 AB), and Javier Baez (.268 BA on 168 AB) have spearheaded the Cubs offensive attack this year.  Wilson Contreras has also been critical to the scoring attack with a batting average of .276 on 152 at bats.

Jon Lester (4-1) has been solid this year pitching 50 innings while allowing 18 runs on 40 hits, 6 homer, 21 walks, and 44 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.52 while Tyler Chatwood (3-3) has pitched 43 innings while allowing 16 runs on 30 hits, 1 homer, 34 walks, and 40 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.14.  Kyle Hendricks (3-3) has pitched 55.2 innings while allowing 23 runs on 49 hits, 9 homers, 11 walks, and 44 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.40 for the season.  Jose Quintana (5-3) has pitched 48.1 innings while allowing 27 runs on 46 hits, 7 homers, 25 walks, and 45 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.47.

How Cleveland Indians & Chicago Cubs Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Indians are 18-27 ATS while the O/U is 23-22-1.  On the other hand, the Cubs are 22-22 ATS while the O/U is 19-23-2.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Overall, the Cubs have won 9 of their last 12 games while the Indians have lost 9 of their last 14 games.  While one can say that the Indian offense has been the culprit in their current skid, a case could also be made that their pitching has certainly given up more runs than usual, lately.  Nonetheless, they would certainly love to get a win over a team they have indeed has success against in recent meetings.  The Cubs, on the other hand, have won their last 2 games and are seeking to increase their winning streak in which to better position themselves to take over the top 2 spots in the NL Central.

Against The Spread Selection: Chicago Cubs

My reason for the pick :

I will side with the Cubs in this matchup simply because of the way in which they have attempted to erect themselves after a rough patch of losses lately.  After losing 3 of their last 4 recently, they have since recovered a bit to win 3 of their last 4 games.  Combine this with the fact that the Cubs have outstanding hitters that can really change the complexity of a game with a single swing, I expect Chicago to win this matchup on Wednesday against an Indians team that, despite their solid pitching, continues to struggle offensively.
