Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Pittsburgh Pirates vs Cincinnati Reds

The Reds will welcome a division rival the Pirates to the Great American Ball Park as the two teams will go head to head in a  3 game series. The Reds is currently last in the NL Central division while the Pirates are 4th. This will be the second meeting after the season opener where the Pirates were able to sweep the series from the Reds.

Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :

The Pirates are coming off a series loss against the Padres. They will hit the road for a 3 game series against the Reds. It has been an inconsistent year for the Pirates the series loss to the Padres dropped them into 4th place in the NL Central with a record of 26-20. The Pirates have the talent the only thing they need to do now is figuring out how to close out games, don’t give up leads and go on a winning streak. The Pirates are only one game behind the leader Brewers. A quality bullpen pitcher differentiates a good team from a great team. With the confidence that the pitchers have with his pitches can determine the outcome of the game, the Pirates allowed 4 runs in the 9th inning causing the Pirates to lose 3 straight games.

Josh Harrison went 3-for-4 with an RBI. It was his first game back on the team since April 15th. He now has a .293/.348/.393 line with a homer and six runs batted in over 15 games.

Austin Meadows went 3-for-4 with a homer. It was his MLB debut and did not disappoint. Since being called up on Friday, the 23-year-old outfielder has been impressive with a .455 average and .722 slugging percentage, I expect his numbers to go up even more as the Pirates will face off against the struggling Reds. The Pirates will benefit from players stepping up because they are missing their best batting average Marte in the starting lineup, he dealing with a right oblique and Austin has done a great job filling in for Marte.

Pitching for the Pirates is Chad Kuhl. He followed up two quality starts with a short, uneven outing against the Padres on Thursday, pitching two perfect frames before giving up four runs and exiting after 4 1/3 innings. He has a 3.24 ERA in three career starts against the Reds.

Cincinnati Reds's Latest Performance :

The Reds will cap off their 7 games home stand as they will face the Pirates, the Reds aren’t having the best season they have a record of 16-32 ranking them last in the NL Central. The problem of the Reds this season has been their pitching they are ranked 26th in the league with an ERA of 4.92. They gave up 28 runs to the Cubs in their last series this also includes a shutout where Reds gave up 10 runs. They have already given 69 homers to the opposing team this season. Tyler Mahle allowed 3 homers on seven hits with six strikeouts in six innings, with that kind of stat line it makes it really hard for the batters to have a great game. Reds pitchers issued 30 walks in the four game.

The Reds is missing their RBI leader Eugenio Suarez, he is dealing with a sore ankle. He has 32 RBIs for the Reds this season.

Scooter Gennett, has been one of the most consistent bats in the Reds’ lineup and is now slashing a robust .329/.364/.521 with seven homers and 27 RBI. The Reds will definitely need his production offensively against the Pirates as he is the only batter is producing this bad Reds team this season.

Pitching for the Reds will be Homer Bailey. He gave up three runs on five hits before recording an out in his last start against the Cubs, and it made for a long night in an 8-1 loss. His velocity is there, but he is not missing bats, and hard contact has often followed as a result.

How Pittsburgh Pirates & Cincinnati Reds Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Pirates are 6-1 in their last 7 vs. National League Central.

Against The Spread Selection: Pittsburgh Pirates

My reason for the pick :

The Pirates should have no problem winning on the road against the Reds. Both teams are headed in a different direction, the Pirates are trying to close the gap on the Brewers to take over the Division while the Reds have entered rebuilding, the Reds must figure out how to fix their pitching woes, if they don’t it is very tough for them to win at this level because they are facing quality batters day in day out.

The Pirates will learn from their previous mistake and protect the lead they have. Pirates to win on the road.

Betting trends for Pittsburgh Pirates:

  • Pirates are 7-2 in their last 9 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.

Betting trends for Cincinnati Reds:

  • Reds are 18-44 in their last 62 vs. a team with a winning record.
