San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :

Bullpen Holds Up

The San Diego Padres endured one of the highest points of their lengthy rebuild as they were able to rattle off 3 straight wins against the Pittsburgh Pirates who entered their series as the first-place team in the NL Central. The Padres were able to close out their series against the Pirates with a solid game from their bats as well as good production out of their bullpen in route to an 8-5 victory. The Padres elected to start 27-year-old Jordan Lyles who has been pretty solid ever since moving into a full-time starter’s role back on May 10th, but his 3rd start of the season wasn’t as pretty as his previous outings. Lyles was roughed up by one of the best offenses in the MLB as the Pirates were able to rally off 4 runs on 7 hits in Lyles 5.2 innings. The bullpen is what saved Lyles from picking up his 2nd loss of the season as they were able to close out the final 3.1 innings while only giving up 3 hits. The Padres brought in 2 of their best relievers as Brad Hand and Kirby Yates have combined for 40.1 innings but have put together a 1.68 ERA. The bats were solid for the young Padres especially in the 9th inning as they used a 4 run inning to get back on top of the Pirates. Christian Villanueva was sensational for the Padres once again as the rookie has been most of the offense for the Padres and 5/20 was no different as he went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Villanueva took the first pitch he saw in the top of the 4th inning deep to centerfield to give him his team-high 12 HR of the season.

Washington Nationals's Latest Performance :

Bad Series

The Washington Nationals entered the weekend as the hottest team in baseball as they won 15 of their last 18 matchups but after a recent sweep against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Nationals need to get back on track if they have hopes of staying pace with the Braves, Phillies, and Mets. The Nationals closed out their series against the Dodgers with a bad game overall as they lost 7-2 behind bad pitching and not enough hitting. The Nationals elected to start their former first-round pick in Stephen Strasburg who has endured inconsistency problems throughout the season and 5/20 was no different as the right-handed pitcher gave up 3 earned runs on 5 hits in 6.2 innings of work. Although Strasburg hasn’t been awful in 2018 with a 5-4 record and a 3.36 ERA he is not along the lines of his past 2 seasons where he went a combined 30-6 with a 3.06 ERA. The Nationals bullpen did not allow the bats to catch up with the 3 runs Strasburg gave up as the combination of Wander Suero and Shawn Kelley gave up 4 earned runs in only 2 innings of work. The Nationals bats were awful in this 5/20 matchup as they were only able to score 2 runs on 4 hits. Trea Turner was the only National to have a good game as the 24-year-old was able to go 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs from the plate. Turner connected with a ball in the bottom of the 3rd inning to give him his 6th HR of the season which is already climbing up on his season total from 2017 where he ended with 11.

Against The Spread Selection: Washington Nationals

My reason for the pick :

The Nationals need to bounce back from their recent struggles against the Dodgers as they are still within striking distance of the NL East lead which they don’t want to let get too far out of reach. The Nationals have not announced a starting pitcher yet but that doesn’t worry me as I am depending on the Nats to do their damage on the hitting end of things as Bryce Harper and Mark Reynolds need to get back on track. The Nationals have been solid all year in the pitching end of things and with them going against a bottom 10 offense I am not worried who the Nationals throw and as long as the top 5 pitching staff keeps the Padres off the board there is no reason why Washington can’t take this home game.
