Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :

Vazquez Roughed Up

The Pittsburgh Pirates were one of the biggest surprise teams out of the gates of the 2018 season and as this came to the surprise of most every baseball fan this team has finally been leveled out as they entered this series in 4th place of the NL Central. The Pirates were looking to end their recent series against the San Diego Padres on a high note as they were at home against one of the worst teams in the MLB and everything was looking good until the 9th innings. The Pirates elected to start their best starter in Trevor Williams who enters this series with a 5-2 record and a 3.05 ERA, and although the 26-year-old struggled he still would have received a win barring the late game collapse. Williams 10th start of the season wasn’t anything to put in the record books as the right-handed starter gave up 4 earned runs on 4 hits in 6 innings of work. The bullpen for the most part was able to hold the Pirates 5-4 lead as the combination of Edgar Santana and Michael Feliz pitched the 7th and 8th innings without giving up a single hit. When this duo left the game everything was blown up in the face of the Pirates as Felipe Vazquez gave up 3 earned runs on 4 hits without recording a single out in the top of the 9th inning. The Pirates were able to compile their runs early on as they had 5 runs on 10 hits but perhaps even though the Pirates loss they may have found a new gem. Pirates former first-round pick Austin Meadows had a great game from the plate in only his 3rd game of his career as the OF hit his 1st HR behind a 3 for 4 game.

Cincinnati Reds's Latest Performance :

Put Back In Place

The Cincinnati Reds have shown flashes of not being so bad this season as they at one point won 6 straight games, but after their last series against the Chicago Cubs, the Reds have been brought down to earth as they were outscored in the 4 games, 28-7. The Reds were not able to close out the series on the slightest of good notes as they were held to only 3 hits in a 6-1 loss. The Reds elected to start rookie Tyler Mahle who has slightly improved over the course of the season as the right-handed starter has lowered his ERA to under a 5.00 with a 4.53. Mahle didn’t have the best of starts on 5/20 as the 23-year-old got roughed up for 4 earned runs on 7 hits in 6 innings of work which turned out to be his 6th loss in as many as 10 starts. The bullpen was solid in Mahle’s exit as the combination of Wandy Peralta, David Hernandez, and Jared Hughes went the remainder of the 3 innings without being responsible for an earned run. These three relievers have been solid out of the bullpen all year as the trio has combined for over 63 innings of play where they have earned a 2.54 ERA. The Reds were not able to muster out anything on the offensive end as after they scored 1 run on 2 hits in the bottom of the 1st inning they were only able to record one more hit in the remaining 8 innings. The lone Reds run came off the bat of Scott Schebler as the 27-year-old was able to record his 17th RBI of the season on an infield single in the bottom of the 1st.

How Pittsburgh Pirates & Cincinnati Reds Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Pittsburgh is 26-20, 11-11 on the road.

Cincinnati is 16-32, 7-18 at home.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Ivan Nova (2-4, 4.79 ERA) for the Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Luis Castillo (3-4, 5.61 ERA) for the Cincinnati Reds.

Nova last started on 5/18 against the Padres where he went 6 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 6 hits in a L.

Castillo last started on 5/19 against the Cubs where he went 5 innings giving up 1 earned run on 6 hits in a ND.

Pittsburgh ranks in the top 5 in runs scored while Cincinnati ranks in the bottom 10.

Pittsburgh ranks in the top 15 in team ERA while Cincinnati ranks in the bottom 5.

Against The Spread Selection: Pittsburgh Pirates

My reason for the pick :

Both pitchers are coming off quality outings and maybe Castillo’s start was more impressive but when it comes down to it I can’t trust the youngster as he has struggled all year in the run department. Castillo has a 5.61 ERA which is one of the worst in the starting rotation and it shouldn’t trend in the right direction in this 5/24 matchup as Pittsburgh currently has a top 5 offense and need to rebound after their recent slump against the San Diego Padres. Nova has struggled this season but the veteran should be able to get back on track as the Reds were only able to score 7 runs in a 4 game series which goes to tell you how bad and inconsistent their bats are. Roll with Pittsburgh to win on the road.

Betting trends for Pittsburgh Pirates:

  • Pittsburgh is 13-5 in day games this season.

  • The over is 6-2-1 as the road favorite this season.

Betting trends for Cincinnati Reds:

  • Cincinnati is 4-18 against NL Central opponents this season.

  • The over is 17-13-1 after a loss this season.
