Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
San Diego Padres vs Los Angeles Dodgers
Game 2 of a 3-game set between the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers will take place on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, at 10:10 pm EST. The Padres are currently in last place in the NL West while the Dodgers are in 4th place. This will be the 3rd meeting of the year (as well as at Dodger Stadium) amongst these two teams, however, the Dodgers have won 4 of the last 6 matchups.
San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :
The Padres come into this matchup winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U has been 3-2. Recently, the Padres tied the Colorado Rockies in a 2-game home set on 5-15-2018 while winning a 4-game road set versus the Pittsburgh Pirates on 5-20-2018. The Padres, however, would come out flat in their following 3-game road series versus the Nationals and would suffer another series loss on 5-23-2018.
For the season, San Diego averages 3.75 runs per game (28th) with a team batting average of .227 (28th), 43 homers (27th) and 34 stolen bases on the year (5th). Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.13 (18th) with 451 strikeouts (7th) and 18 quality starts thus far (21st).
Jose Pirela (.260 BA on 196 AB), Eric Hosmer (.268 BA on 179 AB), and Freddy Galvis (.236 BA on 182 AB) have been the few bright spots for this San Diego squad.
Tyson Ross (4-3) has pitched 60.1 innings while allowing 23 runs on 47 hits, 5 homers, 23 walks, and 64 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.13 has also been solid at the mound. Clayton Richard (3-5) has been improving for the Padres this season and has pitched 61 innings while allowing 34 runs on 64 hits, 6 homers, 21 walks, and 54 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.87.
Los Angeles Dodgers's Latest Performance :
The Dodgers come into this matchup winners of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-2-1. Recently, the Dodgers dropped a 3-game road series to the Marlins on 5-17-2018, however, won a 4-game road set against the dangerous Washington Nationals on 5-22-2018 (with game 1 being postponed due to weather conditions). They would go on to win a 3-game road set against the Colorado Rockies by picking up a 5-3 win on 5-22-2018.
The Dodgers average 4.29 runs per game (15th) with a team batting average of .236 (22nd), 48 homers (22nd), along with 14 stolen bases (28th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.65 (10th) with 479 strikeouts (4th) along with 21 quality starts (11th).
Yasmani Grandal (.255 BA on 145 AB), Cody Bellinger (.243 BA on 185 AB), and Corey Seager (.267 BA on 101 AB) have been the leaders offensively for the Dodgers this season. Chris Taylor (.241 BA on 191 AB) has also been pivotal to the Dodger’s offensive attack.
Clayton Kershaw (1-4) has pitched 44 innings while allowing 14 runs on 40 hits, 7 homers, 10 walks, and 48 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.86. Alex Wood (1-4) has pitched 57 innings while allowing 24 runs on 49 hits, 4 homers, 9 walks, and 51 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.32.
How San Diego Padres & Los Angeles Dodgers Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, the Dodgers are 19-30 ATS while the O/U is 23-24-2. On the other hand, the Padres are 26-25 ATS while the O/U is 23-26-2.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
Game 2 will be just as important as game 1 for these two division teams who have continued to pick up wins despite their ability to struggle on the offensive end, at times. The Padres, however, have won 7 of their last 11 games while the Dodgers have managed to win 6 of their last 7 contests. The Dodgers will send Alex Wood (1-4) to the mound with the opposing pitcher being Jordan Lyles (1-1) who has been relatively solid, yet, looking to rebound from a less than stellar outing in his last start in an 8-5 road win versus the Pirates to where he received the no-decision. Both lineups have tons of experience and success against the opposing pitchers, thus making this game a potential must see, particularly for offensive minded baseball fans.
Against The Spread Selection: San Diego Padres
My reason for the pick :
I applaud both teams for continuing to be resilient in the midst of injury and tons of inconsistency, however, Saturday’s matchup will be decided on the mound. The Dodgers, aside from Yasmani Grandal (5-18), Matt Kemp (4-11), Yasiel Puig (5-13), and Austin Barnes (4-5), have struggled against Lyles in the past. On the other hand, Jose Pirela (3-8), Wil Myers (5-16), Freddie Galvis (7-19), and Christian Villanueva (3-5) have all been successful against Wood in their careers. I like the Padres simply because Lyles has been very solid recently, however, the Padres lack of scoring results in losses and/or no-decisions. Wood coming to the mound should allow the Padres the opportunity to score some runs, thus allowing Lyles to shut down the Dodger lineup in the end. In all, I expect the Padres to perform well on Saturday.
