Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Toronto Blue Jays vs Philadelphia Phillies

Game 1 of a 3-game set between the visiting Toronto Blue Jays and the Philadelphia Phillies will take place at Citizen Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Friday at 7:05 pm EST.  The Blue Jays are currently in 3rd place in the AL East while the Phillies are in 2nd place in the NL East division.  This will be the 1st matchup of the year for both teams, yet, each will be looking to obtain a victory in which to either extend their streak of great baseball, or, to end a current streak of awful baseball, altogether.

Toronto Blue Jays's Latest Performance :

The Blue Jays are losers of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-2-1.  Recently, Toronto endured a 2-game series tie against the NY Mets on 5-16-2018.  Nonetheless, they would come out flat in a 4-game home set versus the Oakland Athletics and would end up getting swept on 5-19-2018.  They were, however, solid in game 1 of a 3-game home set versus the Angels in picking up the 5-3 win on 5-22-2018.

For the season, the Toronto Blue Jays are averaging 4.77 runs per game (7th) with a team batting average of .230 (25th), 62 homers (5th) along with 21 stolen bases (21st).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.56 (24th) with 410 strikeouts (14th) along with 15 quality starts on the season (26th).

Kevin Pillar (.287 BA on 181 AB), Justin Smoak (.255 BA on 157 AB), and Yangervis Solarte (.255 BA on 177 AB) have been the offensive spearheads for the Toronto Blue Jays this season.

Pitcher JA Happ (6-3, 59 IP, 27 R, 49 H, 9 HR, 16 BB, 71 SO with an ERA of 3.97) has been the most consistent pitcher for the Blue Jay’s bullpen this year.  Aaron Sanchez (2-4, 50.1 IP, 28 R, 48 H, 5 HR, 29 BB, 40 SO with an ERA of 4.47) and Marco Estrada (2-4, 50.2 IP, 29 R, 55 H, 11 HR, 15 BB, 40 SO with an ERA of 5.15) have not been as consistent, yet, very serviceable components for the Blue Jays.

Philadelphia Phillies's Latest Performance :

The Phillies enter this matchup losers of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-3.  Recently, with weather conditions preventing game 1 from being played, the Phillies went on to defeat the Orioles in game 2 of a 2-game road set on 5-16-2018 by a score of 4-1.  They would then tie a 4-game road series versus the St. Louis Cardinals on 5-20-2018.  They are currently in a tie in a 3-game home set versus the Atlanta Braves.

For the season, the Phillies are averaging 4.57 runs per game (11th) with a team batting average of .238 (21st), 52 homers (18th), along with 23 stolen bases on the year (15th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 3.45 (8th) with 405 strikeouts (16th), along with 24 quality starts (5th).

Odubel Herrera (.345 BA on 168 AB), Rhys Hoskins (.237 BA on 156 AB), and Cesar Hernandez (.277 BA on 173 AB) have been the stalwarts for this Phillies offensive attack.  Maikel Franco (.259 BA on 147 Ab) and Scott Kingery (.217 BA on 138 AB) are also critical to the Philadelphia offense.

Aaron Nola (6-2) has pitched 64.2 innings this year while allowing 17 runs on 52 hits, 4 homers, 14 walks, and 57 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.37 while Nick Pivetta (4-2) has pitched 53 innings while allowing 19 runs on 45 hits, 5 homers, 12 walks, and 60 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.23 for the season.

How Toronto Blue Jays & Philadelphia Phillies Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Blue Jays are 25-23 ATS while the O/U is 22-21-5.  On the other hand, the Phillies are 24-22 ATS while the O/U is 2-23-1.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The Phillies, after a hot streak, have hit a rough patch in losing 3 of their last 5 games while the Blue Jays continue to lose as they have dropped 7 of their last 9 contests.   The pitcher for Toronto for game 1 has not yet been determined, however, Zack Eflin (1-0) will get the start for the Phillies.  Eflin has not had much experience against this Blue Jay lineup, however, Josh Donaldson, Curtis Granderson, Russell Marin, Kevin Pillar, and Devon Travis are a combined 10-13 versus the righty in the past.  It will be interesting to see how Eflin fares in this matchup on Friday.

Against The Spread Selection: Philadelphia Phillies

My reason for the pick :

The Blue Jays have struggled lately while the Phillies are attempting to erect themselves after dropping some games, recently.  In all, the Phillies are a very good team and will eventually come out of their funk.  A matchup with the slumping Blue Jays could be just what the doctor order.  Expect the Phillies to come out with even more focus in which to put away the Blue Jays earlier in this matchup.
