Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Toronto Blue Jays vs Philadelphia Phillies

Game 2 of a 3-game set between the visiting Toronto Blue Jays and the Philadelphia Phillies will take place at Citizen Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Saturday at 4:05 pm EST.  The Blue Jays are currently in 3rd place in the AL East while the Phillies are in 2nd place in the NL East division.  This will be the 1st matchup of the year for both teams, yet, each will be looking to obtain a victory in which to either extend their streak of great baseball, or, to end a current streak of awful baseball, altogether.

Toronto Blue Jays's Latest Performance :

The Blue Jays are losers of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-2-2.  Recently, Toronto endured a 2-game series tie against the NY Mets on 5-16-2018.  Nonetheless, they would come out flat in a 4-game home set versus the Oakland Athletics and would end up getting swept on 5-19-2018.  They were, however, solid in game 1 of a 3-game home set versus the Angels in picking up the 5-3 win while losing in game 2 by a 5-4 score.

For the season, the Toronto Blue Jays are averaging 4.76 runs per game (7th) with a team batting average of .231 (25th), 64 homers (4th) along with 21 stolen bases (22nd).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.57 (24th) with 416 strikeouts (14th) along with 15 quality starts on the season (27th).

Kevin Pillar (.283 BA on 184 AB), Justin Smoak (.248 BA on 161 AB), and Yangervis Solarte (.265 BA on 181 AB) have been the offensive spearheads for the Toronto Blue Jays this season.

Pitcher JA Happ (6-3, 59 IP, 27 R, 49 H, 9 HR, 16 BB, 71 SO with an ERA of 3.97) has been the most consistent pitcher for the Blue Jay’s bullpen this year.  Aaron Sanchez (2-4, 55.1 IP, 28 R, 50 H, 5 HR, 34 BB, 42 SO with an ERA of 4.07) and Marco Estrada (2-4, 50.2 IP, 29 R, 55 H, 11 HR, 15 BB, 40 SO with an ERA of 5.15) have not been as consistent, yet, very serviceable components for the Blue Jays.

Philadelphia Phillies's Latest Performance :

The Phillies enter this matchup winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-4.  Recently, with weather conditions preventing game 1 from being played, the Phillies went on to defeat the Orioles in game 2 of a 2-game road set on 5-16-2018 by a score of 4-1.  They would then tie a 4-game road series versus the St. Louis Cardinals on 5-20-2018.  They would end up winning a 3-game home set versus the Atlanta Braves on 5-23-2018.

For the season, the Phillies are averaging 4.55 runs per game (11th) with a team batting average of .238 (20th), 52 homers (19th), along with 23 stolen bases on the year (17th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 3.38 (4th) with 414 strikeouts (16th), along with 25 quality starts (5th).

Odubel Herrera (.343 BA on 174 AB), Rhys Hoskins (.239 BA on 159 AB), and Cesar Hernandez (.275 BA on 178 AB) have been the stalwarts for this Phillies offensive attack.  Maikel Franco (.260 BA on 150 Ab) and Scott Kingery (.213 BA on 141 AB) are also critical to the Philadelphia offense.

Aaron Nola (6-2) has pitched 64.2 innings this year while allowing 17 runs on 52 hits, 4 homers, 14 walks, and 57 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.37 while Nick Pivetta (4-2) has pitched 53 innings while allowing 19 runs on 45 hits, 5 homers, 12 walks, and 60 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.23 for the season.

How Toronto Blue Jays & Philadelphia Phillies Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Blue Jays are 26-23 ATS while the O/U is 22-22-5.  On the other hand, the Phillies are 25-22 ATS while the O/U is 20-24-1.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The Phillies, after a hot streak, have hit a rough patch lately while the Blue Jays cannot seem to find their way as they continue to lose.  While each will be looking to get a win in game 2, the Phillies will be looking to capitalize off the Blue Jays inability to remain consistent on the mound.  With that being said, the pitcher for Toronto is unknown, however, Aaron Nola (6-2) will be coming to the mound on Saturday looking to maintain his outstanding pitching on the mound thus far.  It will be interesting to see who the Blue Jays respond with on the mound as well as how they respond to Nola.

Against The Spread Selection: Philadelphia Phillies

My reason for the pick :

Again, the Blue Jays have struggled lately while the Phillies are attempting to erect themselves after dropping some games, recently.  And struggling is what they may have to get used to in that aside from Josh Donaldson (3-3), the rest of the Blue Jays lineup has really struggled against Nola in the past.  In all, I expect the Phillies to lock down the Blue Jays offense once again and get the all-important victory.
