Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

St. Louis Cardinals vs Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates will welcome back the Cards to play in the rubber game, these two teams are equally matched and both teams are from the NL Central division. This will be their 2nd meeting of the year, the last time these two teams met the Pirates ended up sweeping the Cards.

St. Louis Cardinals's Latest Performance :

After an unsuccessful homestand, the Cards will now hit the road for a 6 game road trip. The Cards are 11-10 when playing on the road this season. The Cards are 2nd in the NL Central division they are just a half-game ahead of the Pirates, this series will be the determiner of who will be in 2nd place of the division. Coming into this series the Cards are ranked 6th when it comes to pitching with an ERA of 3.41 with only 179 runs allowed this season.

Jose Martinez is leading the team in batting average and RBIs, he is hitting .312 and has 30 RBIs on the year. After a hot start to the season, he has cooled down in the last two series the team will hope that he can find his groove when the team goes and visit the Pirates. He is currently in a slump but the team will need his offensive production for the big game. Great players always seem to find a way when the team needs them the most.

Pitching for the Cards will be Miles Mikolas. He will look to go 7-0 to start the season in the series finale against the Pirates. The right-hander tossed his first career shutout on Monday against the Royals, allowing just four hits to go with nine strikeouts.

Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :

The Pirates will return home for a 6 game homestand, they are a pretty decent team at home this season with a record of 15-9, even though they have now lost two series in a row, losing 5 of their last 6 games. The Pirates will hope to bounce back when they welcome the Cards to PNC Park to play in a 3 game series. Coming into this series the Pirates are 7th best in the Major when it comes to scoring with 232 runs scored this season, they are 15th in pitching with an ERA of 4.11. For the 4th time this month, the Pirates have lost with Nova controlling the mound he allowed five runs on seven hits including a grand slam in the 4th inning.

Austin Meadows is the 3rd Pirates player to ever hit three home runs in his first six games, he went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer. He has been playing really well for the Pirates ever since he got called up to the Majors. He has the tools to continue hitting for power. It will be a tough choice for the Pirates to decide who they want to play when Marte returns back from the DL list. For the time being his line is .440/.440/.880 with 5 RBIs with 6 game played so far.

Pitching for the Pirates will be Jameson Taillon. He had some of his best swing-and-miss stuff Tuesday night in Cincinnati, but a defensive miscue in right field and a fifth-inning grand slam ruined his six-inning outing. He has recorded a 4.50 ERA in five career starts against the Cardinals.

How St. Louis Cardinals & Pittsburgh Pirates Matchup.

Against The Spread Selection: St. Louis Cardinals

My reason for the pick :

The Cards will come out on top in the rubber game over the Pirates as Mikolas will remind everyone why he is still an elite pitcher in the Major as he will shut down the Pirates batters and win on the road for the Cards. The Cards will still remain 2nd in the division as they now look to close the gap for the top spot in the division.

Betting trends for St. Louis Cardinals:

  • Cardinals are 11-4 in their last 15 vs. National League Central.

Betting trends for Pittsburgh Pirates:

  • Pirates are 6-2 in their last 8 home games vs. a right-handed starter.
