Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Chicago Cubs vs Pittsburgh Pirates
The finale of a 3-game set versus the visiting Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates will take place at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday at 7:05 pm EST. The Cubs are currently in 4th place in the NL Central while the Pirates hold down the 3rd place slot within the division. This will be the 2nd series of the year amongst these two squads, however, the Pirates took 2 of 3 games at Wrigley Field on 4-12-2018, with game 1 being postponed due to weather conditions.
Chicago Cubs's Latest Performance :
The Cubs come into this game losers of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-4. Recently, the Cubs won a 4-game road set against the lowly Cincinnati Reds on 5-20-2018. They did, however, come out flat in game 1 of a 2-game home set versus the Cleveland Indians and suffered a 10-1 shellacking on 5-22-2018 on their way to getting swept on 5-23-2018. They would follow up this effort with a 3-game home series win versus the inconsistent San Francisco Giants on 5-27-2018.
For the season, the Cubs are averaging 5.22 runs per game (3rd) with a team batting average of .258 (5th), 55 homers (19th) along with 18 stolen bases (25th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.37 (4th) with 437 strikeouts (18th) with 22 quality starts on the season, good for 16th in the MLB.
Kris Bryant (.292 BA on 171 AB), Kyle Schwarber (.257 BA on 140 AB), and Javier Baez (.266 BA on 188 AB) have spearheaded the Cubs offensive attack this year. Wilson Contreras has also been critical to the scoring attack with a batting average of .269 on 171 at bats.
Jon Lester (4-2) has been solid this year pitching 57 innings while allowing 19 runs on 46 hits, 6 homer, 22 walks, and 48 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.37 while Tyler Chatwood (3-4) has pitched 45.2 innings while allowing 20 runs on 34 hits, 2 homer, 40 walks, and 41 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.74. Kyle Hendricks (4-3) has pitched 62.2 innings while allowing 24 runs on 51 hits, 10 homers, 13 walks, and 51 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.16 for the season. Jose Quintana (5-4) has pitched 52.2 innings while allowing 31 runs on 51 hits, 8 homers, 27 walks, and 51 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.78.
Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :
The Pittsburgh Pirates have lost 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-2-1. Recently, the Pirates swept a 2-game road set versus the Chicago White Sox on 5-16-2018 yet lost the following 4-game set versus the San Diego Padres on 5-20-2018. They would also go on to lose a 3-game road set to the Reds on 5-24-2018 while also dropping a 3-game home set to the St. Louis Cardinals on 5-27-2018.
For the season, the Pittsburgh Pirates average 4.79 runs per game (7th) with a team batting average of .257 (7th), 57 homers (17th) along with 21 stolen bases (22nd). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.09 (15th) with 433 strikeouts (19th) along with 23 quality starts on the year (14th).
Corey Dickerson (.310 BA on 187 AB), Francisco Cervelli (.285 BA on 130 AB), Starling Marte (.305 BA on 167 AB), and Colin Moran (.286 BA on 143 AB) have been the most consistent hitters in the lineup for the Pirates this year. Jordy Mercer (.250 BA on 168 AB) and Josh Bell (.254 BA on 189 AB) have also been solid for Pittsburgh this year at the plate.
Trevor Williams (5-3, 63 IP, 24 R, 51 H, 7 HR, 20 BB, 43 SO, 3.43 ERA) and Ivan Nova (2-5, 61.2 IP, 39 R, 73 H, 10 HR, 10 BB, 42 SO, 4.96 ERA) have been shining stars on the mound for the Pirates this year.
How Chicago Cubs & Pittsburgh Pirates Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, the Cubs are 24-25 ATS while the O/U is 21-26-2. On the other hand, the Pirates are 24-28 ATS while the O/U is 26-20-6.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
After a fairly decent season early on, the Pirates have stumbled upon a rough patch in their schedule as they have lost 7 of their last 9 games. On the other hand, their division foe, Chicago Cubs, are attempting to climb out of a mini-slump currently, in losing 7 of their last 13 games. Kyle Hendricks (4-3) will come to the mound on Wednesday for the Cubs while right-hander Joe Musgrove (1-0) will get the start for the Pirates. Hendricks has had his problems with the Pirate lineup in the past, yet, looks to overcome those past failures in which to obtain a win. In Musgrove’s last meeting versus the Cubs, he pitched 6 innings while giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, 3 walks, 1 homer, and 5 strikeouts in a 2-0 home loss on 9-3-2016.
Against The Spread Selection: Pittsburgh Pirates
My reason for the pick :
Surprisingly, the Cubs have struggled so far in 2018. While anyone can visually see the talent available for Chicago, either their offense has not caught up with their pitching staff, or, vice versa. Nonetheless, since the Pirates have played well against the Cubbies recently, I will back the Pirates to win the finale on Wednesday. Besides, Hendricks has been very giving to the Pirate lineup in the past with Corey Dickerson (3-8), Josh Harrison (7-18), Starlin Marte (3-18), Jordy Mercer (5-19), Gregor Polanco (9-22), and Sean Rodriquez (3-6) all having fared well against him in the past. In all, the Pirates will obtain some momentum with a hard-fought victory over the Cubs in game 3.
