Tampa Bay Rays's Latest Performance :

Huge Inning Big Win

The Tampa Bay Rays may be fighting the dreadful .500 mark but that is better than what most people expected out of a team who lost most of their offensive production this past offseason, and things may not be getting much better after trading away Denard Span. The Rays were able to close out their recent series against the Baltimore Orioles on a high note after they put together a 6 run bottom of the 3rd inning which propelled the Rays to an 8-3 win. Brad Miller was able to lead the charge as the leadoff hitter was responsible for 3 of the 8 runs the Rays put on the board. Miller didn’t only hit a 2-run double in the bottom of the 3rd inning but he led off the bottom of the 1st with his 5th HR of the season. The Rays have also been highly satisfied with the young 2B Christian Arroyo who is in his first year with Tampa after he was a part of the Evan Longoria trade. Arroyo was able to go 2 for 2 from the plate with 2 RBIs which has extended his batting average up to a .412 which is easily the best on the team. On the pitching end of things, the Rays tried to continue their untraditional method of starting relievers but it may have finally bit them in the butt in this 5/27 matchup. Sergio Romo has been a solid reliever all of his career but he has taken on the role of receiving some starts in 2018, and his 4th start of the season wasn’t pretty as he gave up 3 earned runs on 2 hits while only recording 1 out. The relievers were really good in Romo’s exit especially Austin Pruitt who went 5.2 innings without giving up a single run in the Rays win.

Oakland Athletics's Latest Performance :

Solid Pitching

The Oakland A’s may still be years from competing in a deep AL West but they will take any positive they gain this season and run with it, and they have another thing to move forward with after only giving up 1 run in 2 games against a solid Arizona Diamondbacks team. The A’s are satisfied after their 5/27 matchup against the Diamondbacks as they closed out their 3 game series with a 2-1 win behind a solid debut from Frankie Montas. Frankie Montas entered his season debut with only 2 career starts which both came during the 2016 season but that didn’t stop the 25-year-old from dominating as he only gave up 1 earned run while striking out 7 guys in a 6 inning start. As good as Montas was in this matchup the bullpen was even better as the combination of Yusmeiro Petit, Lou Trivino, and Blake Treinen pitched the final 3 innings without giving up a single hit. Closer Blake Treinen continued his success in the full-time role as he was able to pick up his 12th save of the season and continue improving his 1.04 ERA. The A’s offensively was nothing to put in a fundamental film as they only scored 2 runs on 7 hits but as we saw the pitching was good enough to get past the offensive woes. Jonathan Lucroy was once one of the most sought after catchers in the game but the 31-year-old has not shown that in his recent play as he is only batting .154 in his last 7 games. Hopefully, things are looking up for the veteran as he was able to hit his 1st HR of the season in the bottom of the 3rd inning.

Against The Spread Selection: Oakland A's

My reason for the pick :

The Oakland A’s may be in 4th place in the AL West but they are still a few games above .500 which tells us how competitive this team has been this season. The Rays are throwing a pitcher who hasn’t pitched in 2 seasons and even then he wasn’t anything amazing as he gave up a ton of runs. With that being said I cannot back Eovaldi because I have no idea how he will come out against a solid A’s team in their home ballpark. Manaea has endured some struggles as of recent but the youngster is still very good as he pitched a no-hitter earlier in the year and maintained one of the best ERAs to start the season. I expect Manaea to return back to form here as he gets to go against a hit or miss Rays offense. Oakland wins at home.
