Washington Nationals vs Baltimore Orioles

The finale of a 3-game set between the visiting Washington Nationals and the Baltimore Orioles will take place at Orioles Park, Camden Yards, in Baltimore, Maryland, on Wednesday night at 7:05 pm EST.  The Nationals currently occupy 3rd place in the NL East while the Orioles are last place in the AL West division.  This will be the 1st meeting of the year amongst these two squads, however, the Orioles are winners of 2 of their last 3 games overall while winning the last two at Camden Yards.

Washington Nationals's Latest Performance :

The Washington Nationals have won 4 of their last 5 contests to where the O/U has been 1-4.  Recently, their 2-game home set against the New York Yankees was postponed due to weather conditions; However, Washington would go on to lose a 4-game home set versus the Los Angeles Dodgers on 5-20-2018.  They would, however, come out strong against the lowly Padres to get the series win on 5-23-2018.  They would continue their stellar play on the road against the Miami Marlins in a 3-game set and would sweep the series on 5-27-2018.

For the season, the Nationals are averaging 4.42 runs per game (11th) with a team batting average of .240 (19th), 68 homers, (5th) along with 37 stolen bases (4th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.36 (3rd) with 515 strikeouts (3rd) along with 29 quality starts on the year (3rd).

Howie Kendrick (.303 BA on 152 AB), Trea Truner (.270 BA on 204 AB), Bryce Harper (.232 BA on 177 AB), and Michael A. Taylor (.192 BA on 177 AB) have been the offensive leaders for this Washington Nationals squad thus far.

Max Scherzer (8-1, 71.2 IP, 20 R, 47 H, 6 HR, 18 BB, 108 SO, 2.13 ERA) and Gio Gonzales (5-2, 56.2 IP, 17 R, 49 H, 3 HR, 26 BB, 60 SO, 2.38 ERA) have been the most consistent on the pitching staff while Stephen Strasburg (6-4, 72 IP, 28 R, 57 H, 10 HR, 19 BB, 83 SO, 3.12 ERA) and Tanner Roark (2-4, 65.1 IP, 24 R, 46 H, 7 HR, 19 BB, 58 SO, 3.17 ERA) have also been solid on the mound for the Nationals this year.

Baltimore Orioles's Latest Performance :

The Baltimore Orioles come into this matchup losers of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-2. Recently, after a 4-game road series loss against the Boston Red Sox on 5-20-2018, the O’s followed this up by tying a 4-game set on the road against the White Sox on 5-24-2018.  They would follow this effort up by losing a 3-game road set against the Rays on 5-27-2018.

For the season, the Orioles average only 3.91 runs per game (27th) with a team batting average of .232 (25th), 63 homers (11th) along with 17 stolen bases on the year (26th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 5.06 (29th) with 419 strikeouts (24th) along with 22 quality starts (15th).

Manny Machado (.324 BA, 207 AB) has been the most effective offensive option for the Orioles this year.  Meanwhile, Trey Mancini (.240 BA, 200 AB) and Adam Jones (.274 BA, 212 AB) have also been effective for the offensive attack.

Dylan Bundy (3-6, 62.2 IP, 58 H, 37 R, 14 HR, 20 BB, 77 SO) and Kevin Gauseman (3-4, 64.2 IP, 72 H, 31 R, 11 HR, 17 BB, 59 SO) have pitched the most innings for the Orioles this season while Andrew Cashner (2-6, 60.1 IP, 70 H, 37 R, 11 HR, 31 BB, 54 SO) has also been serviceable for Baltimore this season.

How Washington Nationals & Baltimore Orioles Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Orioles are 20-33 ATS while the O/U is 25-27-1.  On the other hand, the Nationals are 26-25 ATS while the O/U is 22-27-2.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This matchup will be against two teams that continue to trend in different directions.  On one hand, the Orioles continue to drop games as they have lost 8 of their last 12 games while the Nationals have seemingly climbed their way out of losing skid in winning 5 of their last 6 and coming off a sweep of the Marlins on the road.  The pitcher for Baltimore is yet to be determined, however, David Hess (2-1) will get the start for the Nats looking for his 3rd win of the season.  This will be Hess’ first crack at the Orioles lineup, yet, for the season, he has pitched 17.1 innings while allowing 8 runs on 18 hits, 5 walks, 4 homers, and 10 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.15.

Against The Spread Selection: Washington Nationals

My reason for the pick :

After losing 3 in a row, the Nats have erected themselves and are, once again, playing stellar baseball.  It is for this reason that I will back them against this struggling Orioles squad.  The Nationals have a solid pitching staff that I expect to neutralize the inconsistent bats for Baltimore on Wednesday.  In all, the Orioles are simply not good right now and with the Nationals looking for wins in which to increase their position in the NL East, the focus should certainly be there for the home team.
