Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Cleveland Indians vs Minnesota Twins

Game 2 of a 4-game set between the visiting Cleveland Indians and the Minnesota Twins will take place at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota, at 8:10 pm EST on Friday night.  The Indians have been on a decent win streak lately and currently occupy the top spot within the AL Central while the Twins have been on a tough skid recently thus occupying the 3rd place slot within the AL Central division.  This will be the 1st meeting of the year amongst these two squads, however, the Indians have won 9 of the last 16 meetings while having been dominant against the Twins at Target Field winning 5 of the last 6 contests.

Cleveland Indians's Latest Performance :

The Cleveland Indians come into this matchup winners of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 4-0-1.  Recently, the Indians would sweep a 2-game road set versus the Chicago Cubs on 5-23-2018, however, would lose the first 2 games of a 4-game home set to the Houston Astros yet tied the series on 5-27-2018.  This momentum would translate into their following 3-game home set against the Chicago White Sox as they won the first 2 games of the series, with game 2 being a 7-3 victory on 5-29-2018.

For the season, the Indians are averaging 4.96 runs per game (6th) with a team batting average of .253 (12th), 79 homers (3rd) along with 29 stolen bases (12th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.23 (18th) with 467 strikeouts (14th), along with 35 quality starts, good for 2nd in the MLB.

Jose Ramirez (.296 BA on 203 AB) and Francisco Lindor (.300 BA on 223 AB) have spearheaded the Indians offensive attack this season.  Yonder Alonso (.243 BA on 173 AB) and Edwin Encarnacion (.228 BA on 184 AB) have struggled a bit, yet, continue to be offensive leaders for the Indians.  Jason Kipnis (.197 BA on 203 AB) has also struggled thus far in the young season.

The Indians also possesses a host of solid pitchers such as Corey Kluber (7-2, 78.2 IP, 21 R, 58 H, 11 HR, 10 BB, 78 SO, 2.17 ERA) and Trevor Bauer (4-3, 72.1 IP, 24 R, 57 H, 4 HR, 25 BB, 86 SO, 2.61 ERA) have been the most consistent thus far.  Mike Clevenger (4-2, 72.1 IP, 25 R, 62 H, 4 HR, 23 BB, 61 SO, 3.14 ERA) and Carlos Carrasco (6-3, 72.1 IP, 33 R, 64 H, 10 HR, 16 BB, 71 SO, 3.98 ERA) have been very solid in their own right thus far in the season and are bright spots for Cleveland’s pitching staff.

Minnesota Twins's Latest Performance :

The Minnesota Twins come into this game losers of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-4.  Recently, the Twins returned to form in winning a 3-game home set versus the Detroit Tigers on 5-23-2018.  Furthermore, they would get swept by a hot Seattle Mariners squad in a 3-game road set on 5-27-2018.  They are currently tied in a 3-game road set against the reeling Kansas City Royals as a result of losing 2-1 in game 2.

For the season, the Twins are averaging 4.04 runs per game (23rd) with a team batting average of .235 (24th), 48 homers (29th) along with 17 stolen bases (27th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.12 (16th) with 461 strikeouts (15th) along with 21 quality starts on the year (21st).

Eduardo Escobar (.257 BA on 183 AB), Joe Mauer (.283 BA on 138 AB), Max Kepler (.253 BA on 178 AB), and Brian Dozier (.237 BA on 207 AB) have been consistent within the Twins offense this season; However, Eddie Rosario (.302 BA on 199 AB) has been instrumental in their offensive attack as well.

Pitcher Kyle Gibson (1-3, 63 IP, 26 R, 51 H, 5 HR, 28 BB, 66 SO, 3.34 ERA) and Jose Berrios (5-5, 68.2 IP, 28 R, 52 H, 9 HR, 13 BB, 67 SO, 3.67 ERA) have led the Twins pitching staff thus far.  Jake Odorizzi (3-2, 59.1 IP, 24 R, 52 H, 12 HR, 24 BB, 58 SO, 3.34 ERA) has also been solid for Minnesota this year.

How Cleveland Indians & Minnesota Twins Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Indians are 24-29 ATS while the O/U is 29-22-2.  On the other hand, the Twins are 29-21 ATS while the O/U is 23-26-1.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This matchup will be one which entails two teams that are going in different directions.  On one hand, the Indians are on fire winning 6 of their last 8 games while the Twins have lost 8 of their last 12 games, overall, and looking to obtain some momentum against one of the more dangerous teams in the MLB.  The pitcher for the Indians have not been announced, however, Jose Berrios (5-5) will take the hill for the Minnesota Twins in Friday’s matchup looking to get his 4th win in 6 starts.  Francisco Lindor (.333 BA on 9 AB) and Jose Ramirez (.300 BA on 10 AB) have the most experience and success against Berrios in the past; However, Michael Brantley (.200 BA on 5 AB), Melky Cabrera (.125 BA on 8 AB), Jason Kipnis (.111 BA on 9 AB), Rajai Davis (0-2), Edwin Encarnacion (0-3), Yan Gomes (0-5), and Roberto Perez (0-2) have not fared as well against the right-hander in the past.

Totals Selection: Under

My reason for the prediction :

Because the Indians have been so dominant in the last few outings versus these two teams, I expect them to control the pace of this matchup on Friday.  Yet, despite the Cleveland offense heating up over the past few games (over is 6-1-1 in last 8 games), I see the under as being the play in game 2.  Jose Berrios has been solid on the mound for the Twins this season and will certainly neutralize the bats for the Indians for a bit.  Furthermore, the under is 3-0 in Berrios’ last 3 starts.  On the other hand, expect the Indians pitching staff to also dominate the cold bats for the Twins, thus allowing the total to go well under its set number of runs.
