Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Tampa Bay Rays vs Oakland Athletics
This will be the third game of the four-game series between the Rays and the Athletics, the Rays took the series opener in extra innings as the A’s will look to respond after that hard fought lost. The Rays are 3rd in the AL East while the A’s are 4th in the AL West. This will be the first time these two teams have met this season.
Tampa Bay Rays's Latest Performance :
The Rays were able to win the series opener against the A’s, they improve their road record to 15-13 on the season with that win they move up to third place of the AL East division. Jonny Venters came through for the Rays as he finally got his first save since August 22, 2011. Chris Archer strikes out seven batters while allowing just four hits over six scoreless innings in the opener. The Rays offense weren’t able to do anything until the 12th innings. The Rays are ranked 20th in scoring with 220 scored this season. It is the team first extra-inning win since 2010.
Mallex Smith plated the only run of the afternoon Monday in the Rays’ defeat of the A’s. Smith hit an RBI single in the top of the 13th inning. He also doubled earlier in the game. The speedy 25-year-old outfielder is batting .297/.371/.394 with zero homers, 12 RBI, 11 stolen bases, and 17 runs scored in 47 games this season. The Rays will need more production out of their RBI leader Cron, he has gone quiet the last two games after picking up 2 RBIs against the O’s. He is slashing .263/.323/.468 with 30 RBIs and 11 homers this season.
Pitching for the Rays will be Nathan Eovaldi. He will be making his debut after suffering an elbow injury. The hard-throwing right-hander last pitched in the majors in 2016, going 9-8 with a 4.76 ERA over 24 appearances including 21 starts for the Yankees. It will be very interesting how he plays in his first game back.
Oakland Athletics's Latest Performance :
On the flip side, the A’s weren’t able to pull out a win at home, they ended up being shut out by the Rays. The A’s aren’t having a bad season but they are very unfortunate to be put in a division that is so competitive. 54 games in the A’s have a record of 28-26 placing them 4th in the stack AL West division. The Rays will look to bounce back after losing the opener. They have the same home and road record at 14-13. The A’s weren’t able to score because they were missing their leadoff hitter Khris Davis, the A’s offense has done little without him. Trevor Cahill played great as he pitched 8 scoreless innings but was unfortunate that the A’s lost in the extra innings. The A’s has now scored four or fewer runs in their 12th consecutive home game. It goes to show that to win a baseball game at this level both the pitcher and the batter must work together as one to get the job done.
Jed Lowrie went 2-for-5 with a walk Monday in the Athletics’ extra-innings loss to the Rays. Lowrie hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth with the score tied 0-0, but he was retired on a force out at third base and the A’s were unable to get a run across. They ultimately fell 1-0 in 13 innings. Lowrie has an excellent .303/.369/.505 batting line with 38 RBI in 53 games this year, though he’s gone a little cold lately. He will have to the guy that steps up for the A’s because they are desperate for some instant offense at the moment.
Pitching for the A’s will be Daniel Mengden. He was able to pull a two-hit shutout against the D-backs on Saturday. He fanned five and didn’t walk a batter in the 102-pitch outing. Mengden, who is riding a 17-inning scoreless streak, has a 1.07 ERA in five May starts.

Against The Spread Selection: Oakland Athletics
My reason for the pick :
The A’s will be able to beat the Rays at home in game 3 at home, as Mengden will put on a masterful pitching performance as he will shut down the Rays batter. Although the A’s offense hasn’t been the best thus far after what the batter see what Mengden is doing on the mound they will try to do their best on the plate to ensure a victory at home for Mengden.
