Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Miami Marlins vs Arizona Diamondbacks

Game 2 of a 3-game set between the visiting Miami Marlins and the Arizona Diamondbacks will take place at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, at 10:10 pm EST on Saturday night.  The Marlins have been reeling all season and, lately, have lost 7 of their last 10 games.  Currently, they occupy the last place slot within the NL East; On the other hand, the Arizona Diamondbacks have also struggled yet seeks to erect themselves after a disastrous batch of baseball in which they were losers of 15 of 17 by winning their last 2 games against the lowly Cincinnati Reds.  The D’backs are currently in 2nd place in the NL West division.  This will be the 1st meeting of the year amongst these two squads, however, both teams have split the last 6 games with the D’backs winning 2 of 3 in their last meeting at Chase Field on 9-22-2017.

Miami Marlins's Latest Performance :

The Marlins come into this matchup losers of 4 of their last 5 games to there the O/U was 2-3.  They recently won a 3-game set versus the Mets by picking up a slim 2-1 road win in game 3 on 5-23-2018.  Unfortunately, the Marlins would go on be swept by the resurgent Washington Nationals on 5-27-2018 in a 3-game home set.  After winning game 1 of their following series on the road against the San Diego Padres on 5-28-2018 by a score of 7-2, the Marlins dropped the next two games with the finale to be decided on 5-31-2018.

For the season, the Marlins average 3.44 runs per game (30th) with a team batting average of .232 (25th), 41 homers (30th) along with 12 stolen bases (29th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.89 (26th) with 447 strikeouts (21st) along with 18 quality starts (24th).

Starlin Castro (.287 BA on 209 AB), Brian Anderson (.385 BA on 205 AB), and Justin Bour (.243 BA on 169 AB) have been the offensive superstars for the Marlins this year.  Derek Dietrich (.255 BA on 184 AB) and Miguel Rojas (.262 BA on 191 AB) have also been critical components to the Miami offensive attack.

Jose Urena (0-7, 69.1 IP, 35 R, 64 H, 8 HR, 17 BB, 58 SO, 4.41 ERA) have pitched the most inning for the Marlins this year.  Caleb Smith (4-5) has also pitched 56.1 innings while allowing 22 runs on 39 hits, 5 homers, 26 walks, and 69 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.51.

Arizona Diamondbacks's Latest Performance :

The Arizona Diamondbacks have lost 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-3.  Recently, the D’backs were swept in 2-straight series at the hands of the Mets at CitiField on 5-20-2018 along with the surging Milwaukee Brewers on 5-23-2018.  Though they managed to win game 1 of a 3-game road set versus the Oakland Athletics by a score of 7-1, they would end up dropping the final to games to lose the series on 5-27-2018.  Once again, in their following series at home against the Reds, they would win game 1 by a score of 12-5, yet, lose the last 2 of the set to drop the series, altogether on 5-30-2018.

For the season, the D’backs average 3.80 runs per game (27th) with a team batting average of .215 (30th), 56 homers (21st) along with 33 stolen bases (9th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.40 (4th) with 482 strikeouts (12th) along with 24 quality starts for the season (12th).

David Peralta (.257 BA on 191 AB) and A.J. Pollock (.293 BA on 150 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Diamondbacks thus far.  Paul Goldschmidt (.209 BA on 196 AB) and Nick Ahmed (.202 BA on 173 AB) have also been solid offensively for Arizona this season.

Patrick Corbin (5-2, 75.1 IP, 25 R, 51 H, 10 HR, 20 BB, 98 SO, 2.99 ERA) and Zack Greinke (3-4, 66.2 IP, 27 R, 59 H, 11 HR, 10 BB, 72 SO, 3.64 ERA) have pitched the most innings for the D’backs this season while Zack Godley (5-4, 61.2 IP, 35 R, 64 H, 8 HR, 31 BB, 69 SO, 4.38 ERA) has also been solid on the mound thus far.

How Miami Marlins & Arizona Diamondbacks Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Marlins are 27-28 ATS while the O/U is 26-29.  On the other hand, the Arizona Diamondbacks are 26-29 ATS while the O/U is 24-29-2.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

While the Marlins have had trouble all season with winning consistently, the Diamondbacks are finding it very difficult in which to regain their momentum and confidence after a current losing skid which has now recorded the D’backs losing 19 of the last 26 games.  Of course, they won 2-straight over the Reds to win their 1st series in their last 6 sets, yet, suffered a 7-4 loss on 5-30-2018.  To get them back on track, Arizona will turn to Zack Greinke (3-4) who will be seeking his 1st win on the mound in 7 starts.  For the Marlins, Caleb Smith (4-5) will draw the start and will be looking to factor in a victory for the 3rd straight time in as many outings.

Totals Selection: Under

My reason for the prediction :

With both teams continuing to struggle, I really do not have much confidence that the offenses will be clicking much in this game on Saturday.  In addition, the under has been the play in 6 of the last 9 games for the Marlins while it has been prevalent in 7 of the last 12 games for the D’backs.  Combine this with the fact that the under has been the play in Greinke’s last 5 starts along with 5 of the last 7 for Smith, expect this to be yet another game that will be decided on the mound.  Greinke, it would be important to note, has had his troubles against the lineup for the Marlins, however, has allowed a tad less than 2 runs per game in his last 6 starts.
