Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Philadelphia Phillies vs San Francisco Giants

Game 2 of a 3-game series versus the Philadelphia Phillies and the San Francisco Giants will take place at AT&T Park in San Francisco, California, on Saturday night at 10:05 pm EST.  The Phillies currently find themselves in 3rd place within the NL East due to a recent rash of losses that unseated them from the top spot within the NL East, however, the Giants have also had to deal with a string of losses both lately and throughout the season, thus explaining their 4th place standing within the NL West division.  This will be the 2nd meeting of the year amongst these two squads with the Phillies taking a 4-game sweep at home against the Giants on 5-10-2018.

Philadelphia Phillies's Latest Performance :

The Phillies enter this matchup losers of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-1-2.  Recently, they would tie a 4-game road series versus the St. Louis Cardinals on 5-20-2018, but, would end up winning the following 3-game home set versus the Atlanta Braves on 5-23-2018.  The Phillies would follow up this set by losing a 3-game set versus the struggling Blue Jays on 5-25-2018 while most recently losing 2 of 3 road games against the Dodgers in a 4-game set.

For the season, the Phillies are averaging 4.45 runs per game (10th) with a team batting average of .237 (22nd), 59 homers (19th), along with 24 stolen bases on the year (19th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 3.46 (5th) with 478 strikeouts (14th), along with 27 quality starts (5th).

Odubel Herrera (.320 BA on 194 AB), Rhys Hoskins (.233 BA on 176 AB), and Cesar Hernandez (.269 BA on 201 AB) have been the stalwarts for this Phillies offensive attack.  Maikel Franco (.262 BA on 168 Ab) and Scott Kingery (.217 BA on 161 AB) are also critical to the Philadelphia offense.

Aaron Nola (6-2) has pitched 71.1 innings this year while allowing 18 runs on 53 hits, 4 homers, 17 walks, and 67 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.27 while Nick Pivetta (4-3) has pitched 58 innings while allowing 21 runs on 49 hits, 5 homers, 14 walks, and 67 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.26 for the season.

San Francisco Giants's Latest Performance :

The San Francisco Giants come into this matchup losers of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-1-1.  Recently, the Giants would come out flat in game 1 of a 2-game road set versus the Houston Astros and would suffer an 11-2 setback on their way to losing game 2 on 5-23-2018 by a score of 4-1.  They would continue their road set by losing a 3-game set against the Chicago Cubs on 5-27-2018 along with a 3-game set to the Colorado Rockies on 5-30-2018.

For the season, the Giants are averaging 4.11 runs per game (24th) with a team batting average of .260 (5th), 57 homers (20th) along with 24 stolen bases (20th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.62 (23rd) with 414 strikeouts (28th) along with 18 quality starts (25th).

Brandon Belt (.309 BA on 191 AB) and Buster Posey (.299 BA on 167 AB) have been the most consistent hitters for the Giants this year.  Evan Longoria (.262 BA on 210 AB) has also been solid at the plate for San Francisco.

Chris Stratton (6-3, 58 IP, 34 R, 57 H, 8 HR, 27 BB, 48 SO, 4.97 ERA) has been consistent on the mound for the Giants this season.  On the other hand, Ty Blach (3-5, 61.2 IP, 38 R, 76 H, 4 HR, 23 BB, 31 SO, 4.96 ERA) has also been solid for the Giants in 2018.

How Philadelphia Phillies & San Francisco Giants Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Phillies are 27-26 ATS while the O/U is 24-25-4.  On the other hand, the Giants are 31-25 ATS while the O/U is 29-24-3.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

On one hand, the Giants have not been able to gain any traction at all as it pertains to stringing together wins to remain competitive in their division; However, the Phillies, who were playing well earlier in the season, have not been able to pick things up recently as they have lost 5 of their last 8 games.  While the pitcher for the Giants have not been determined, Vince Velasquez (4-5) will take the mound for the Phillies in game 3 looking to regain his form from a few weeks ago when he won 3-straight starts.  Since, Velasquez has suffered a loss and a no-decision in his last 2 outings.  Brandon Crawford (1-2) and Andrew McCutchen (1-3) have both had the most experience against Velasquez in the past, however, Brandon Belt (0-2), Nick Hundley (0-3), and Pablo Sandoval (0-3) have had no success against the right-hander in their respective careers.

Against The Spread Selection: Philadelphia Phillies

My reason for the pick :

The Phillies will break out of their funk sooner or later.  It is for this reason that it would be great if they were to continue to use this series against the offensively inept Giants to regain their confidence and momentum moving forward.  While the pitching staff for the Phillies have not been consistent recently (allowing over 6 runs/game in last 4 losses), I expect Velasquez, who has really been solid for the Phillies this season, to neutralize the batters for the Giants while the lineup for the Phillies obtaining the hits needed in which to come out with a hard-fought victory on Saturday in game 2.
