Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Washington Nationals vs Atlanta Braves

Game 3 of a 4-game set between the visiting Washington Nationals and the Atlanta Braves who, after a stellar season have dropped some huge games recently, will take place at SunTrust Park in Atlanta, Georgia, on Friday night at 7:35 pm EST.  Due to a current rough patch, the Braves were overtaken by the Nationals recently and now occupy the 2nd place slot within the NL East while the Nationals are in the top spot in the division for the 1st time in 2018.  This will be the 3rd matchup amongst these two teams his season with both teams splitting the last 6 games while the Braves took 2 of 3 games in their last meeting at SunTrust Park on 4-4-2018.

Washington Nationals's Latest Performance :

The Washington Nationals have won their last 6 contests to where the O/U has been 1-5.  Recently, Washington would go on to lose a 4-game home set versus the Los Angeles Dodgers on 5-20-2018, yet, would come out strong against the lowly Padres to get the series win on 5-23-2018.  They would continue their stellar play on the road against the Miami Marlins in a 3-game set and would sweep the series on 5-27-2018.  They took this momentum into their following road 3-game set against the struggling Baltimore Orioles and would get the sweep on 5-30-2018, with game 3 being by a slim 2-0 victory.

For the season, the Nationals are averaging 4.38 runs per game (11th) with a team batting average of .242 (18th), 72 homers, (5th) along with 40 stolen bases (3rd).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.21 (2nd) with 539 strikeouts (4th) along with 31 quality starts on the year (3rd).

Trea Truner (.267 BA on 217 AB), Bryce Harper (.238 BA on 189 AB), and Michael A. Taylor (.203 BA on 187 AB) have been the offensive leaders for this Washington Nationals squad thus far.

Max Scherzer (9-1, 79.2 IP, 20 R, 49 H, 6 HR, 19 BB, 120 SO, 2.13 ERA) and Gio Gonzales (6-2, 64.1 IP, 17 R, 51 H, 3 HR, 28 BB, 63 SO, 2.10 ERA) have been the most consistent on the pitching staff while Stephen Strasburg (6-4, 72 IP, 28 R, 57 H, 10 HR, 19 BB, 83 SO, 3.12 ERA) and Tanner Roark (2-4, 65.1 IP, 24 R, 46 H, 7 HR, 19 BB, 58 SO, 3.17 ERA) have also been solid on the mound for the Nationals this year.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

The Braves come into this game winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U is 3-2.   Recently, the Braves lost a 3-game road set against the Philadelphia Phillies on 5-23-2018 while following this series with yet another road series loss against the Boston Red Sox on 5-27-2018.  They would, however, recover in their next 4-game home series versus the Mets, yet, could only settle for the series tie after a 4-1 loss on 5-30-2018.

For the season, the Braves are averaging 5.05 runs per game (4th) with a team batting average of .264 (2nd), 65 homers (11th) along with 37 stolen bases (6th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.64 (10th) with 484 strikeouts (11th) along with 22 quality starts on the season (16th).

Freddie Freeman (.335 BA on 209 AB), Nick Markakis (.332 BA on 220 AB), Ryan Flaherty (.277 BA on 112 AB), and Ozzie Albies (.273 BA on 238 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Braves all season.  Dansby Swanson (.266 BA on 154 AB) and Ender Incarte (.253 BA on 221 AB) have also been consistent at the plate for the Braves.

Mike Foltynewicz (4-3, 60 IP, 21 R, 48 H, 5 HR, 29 BB, 69 SO, 2.55 ERA) and Brandon McCarthy (5-2, 57.1 IP, 34 R, 72 H, 8 HR, 19 BB, 45 SO, 5.02 ERA) have been bright spots on the mound for the Braves this year.  Sean Newcomb (5-1, 55.2 IP, 20 R, 42 H, 3 HR, 28 BB, 62 SO, 2.75 ERA) and Julio Teheran (4-3, 67 IP, 30 R, 52 H, 11 HR, 30 BB, 54 SO, 4.03 ERA have also been solid for Atlanta in 2018.

How Washington Nationals & Atlanta Braves Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Braves are 30-25 ATS while the O/U is 26-26-3.  On the other hand, the Nationals are 29-25 ATS while the O/U is 22-30-2.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Coming to the mound on Saturday for the Braves will be Brandon McCarthy (5-2), who has had a bit of experience against this dangerous Nationals lineup.  Matt Adams (.500 BA on 10 AB), Bryce Harper (.250 BA on 4 AB), Trea Turner (.500 BA on 2 AB), Anthony Rendon (.200 BA on 5 AB), and Mark Reynolds (.250 BA on 4 AB) have had a bit of success against McCarthy in the past; However, Michael A. Taylor (0-2) has not fared well against McCarthy in his career.  As stated, this will be a tough series for the Braves not only because of their inconsistent play lately, but, also due in large part to the play of the Nationals, who are playing very dominant baseball at his time of year.  In all, I would say that with McCarthy on the mound, it provides the best chance for the Bravos to get a win in the series.

Against The Spread Selection: Atlanta Braves

My reason for the pick :

Atlanta will be counting on McCarthy to salvage this series against the Nats.  While he has not been stellar against the Nationals lineup, I feel as though McCarthy has been very solid thus far in the season.  I must say that his ERA (5.02) worries me, nonetheless, I feel as though the Braves, as a whole, will pull out all the stops in which to maintain pressure on the Nats for that top spot in the NL East.  I will give Atlanta the edge simply due to (1) McCarthy’s past performances, along with (2) not knowing the identity of the opposing starter as of yet.
