Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
NY Yankees vs Baltimore Orioles
The finale of a 4-game set between the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles will take place at Orioles Park, Camden Yards, in Baltimore, Maryland, on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 pm EST. Both teams are within the AL East where the Yankees are currently ranked 2nd while the Orioles occupy the 5th place slot within the division. This will be the 2nd meeting of the year amongst these two teams as the Orioles managed to get the series win in a 4-game set at Yankee Stadium earlier in the year on 4-8-2018.
NY Yankees's Latest Performance :
The Yankees have won 3 of their last 5 matchups to where the O/U was 2-2-1. After a 3-game road series win versus the lowly Kansas City Royals on 5-20-2018, the Yankees would move on to lose a 3-game set to the Rangers at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas, on 5-23-2018. New York would go on to win their next two series against the AL West in the Los Angeles Angels and the Houston Astros on 5-30-2018. As stated, game 1 of a 3-game road series versus the awful Baltimore Orioles was postponed due to weather.
For the season, the Yankees average 5.64 runs per game (1st) with a team batting average of .256 (12th), 87 home runs (1st), along with 23 stolen bases (21st). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.83 (12th) with 531 strikeouts (5th), along with 26 quality starts on the season (7th).
Aaron Judge (.292 BA on 195 AB), Didi Gregorius (.241 BA on 191 AB), and Brett Gardner (.256 BA on 180 AB) have been outstanding for the Yankees this year at the plate. Giancarlo Stanton (.248 BA on 202 AB) and Miguel Andujar (.290 BA on 176 AB) have also been solid at the plate thus far.
On the other hand, Luis Severino (8-1) has pitched 78 innings while allowing 20 runs on 55 hits, 4 homers, 21 walks, and 92 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.31 while Masahiro Tanaka(6-2) is also an important piece to the Yankee pitching staff as he has pitched 62.1 innings while allowing 34 runs on 51 hits, 12 homers, 17 walks, and 58 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.62.
Baltimore Orioles 's Latest Performance :
The Baltimore Orioles come into this matchup having lost their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-4. Recently, after a 4-game road series loss against the Boston Red Sox on 5-20-2018, the O’s followed this up by tying a 4-game set on the road against the White Sox on 5-24-2018. They would follow this effort up by losing a 3-game road set against the Rays on 5-27-2018 while also getting swept in the following series in a 3-game home set versus the Washington Nationals on 5-30-2018 after a 2-0 loss in the finale. Their opening matchup at home against the Yankees on 5-31-2018 was postponed due to weather conditions.
For the season, the Orioles average only 3.73 runs per game (29th) with a team batting average of .231 (26th), 64 homers (14th) along with 17 stolen bases on the year (26th). Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.99 (28th) with 436 strikeouts (25th) along with 25 quality starts (8th).
Manny Machado (.324 BA, 219 AB) has been the most effective offensive option for the Orioles this year. Meanwhile, Trey Mancini (.232 BA, 207 AB) and Adam Jones (.281 BA, 224 AB) have also been effective for the offensive attack.
Dylan Bundy (3-7, 68.2 IP, 69 H, 40 R, 16 HR, 20 BB, 83 SO, 4.46 ERA) and Kevin Gauseman (3-4, 64.2 IP, 72 H, 31 R, 11 HR, 17 BB, 59 SO) have pitched the most innings for the Orioles this season while Andrew Cashner (2-6, 60.1 IP, 70 H, 37 R, 11 HR, 31 BB, 54 SO) has also been serviceable for Baltimore this season.
How NY Yankees & Baltimore Orioles Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, the Yankees are 29-23 ATS while the O/U is 30-20-2. On the other hand, the Orioles are 20-36 ATS while the O/U is 25-30-1.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
Normally, I would most certainly pick the Yankees to win the finale, particularly, over a team that has not been exactly competitive this season. Nonetheless, I am worried concerning the pitcher for the Yankees. Dylan Bundy (3-7), who has been awful this year for the Orioles will battle CC Sabathia (2-1) for the Yankees on Sunday. Sabathia, despite his record, has had a rough go of it lately in giving up an average of 4 runs per game in his last 4 starts, with his last outing allowing 5 runs on 8 hits against the Houston Astros on 5-29-2018. It will be interesting to see how he responds to a rough patch on the mound against one of the coldest offenses in the league.
Totals Selection: Over
My reason for the prediction :
The Yankees are averaging a tad over 5 runs per game in their last 5 wins while the Orioles are allowing their opponents an average of 4.8 runs per game in their last 5 losses. In all, the Yankees are playing great baseball and are sure to put some runs on the board with each outing. Facing Bundy can only enhance their ability to do so as Bundy has certainly been inclined to losing against this dangerous Yankee lineup (1-3 in last 4 starts). Again, with CC coming in a bit in a funk on the mound, I expect the over to be the play in the finale on Sunday afternoon.
