Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Pittsburgh Pirates vs St. Louis Cardinals
The Cards will welcome back the Pirates for the rubber game at Busch Stadium as they conclude a three-game series. The Cardinals are 3rd in the NL Central Division while the Pirates are in 4th.
Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :
The Pirates weren’t able to take advantage of the opportunity as they dropped the series opener against the Cards. They now have a record of 29-27 placing them 4th in the NL Central division. After a hot start to the season, the Pirates have cooled down winning 2 of their last 6 games. The Pirates will be looking to bounce back after losing the series opener in a walk-off homer. They were managed to put up four runs in the 8th inning but ended up giving up 5 in the 9th, the Pirates bullpen must do a better job if the Pirates want to crawl back into the standings. The Pirates were only trailing by one run, they had a great chance to take control of the game in the 7th inning but got hit by the Cards with a double play with the bases loaded a missed opportunity for the Pirates.
Francisco Cervelli went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and two runs scored. He gave the Pirates what appeared to be a decisive three-run lead with his homer in the eighth inning, taking Cards closer Bud Norris deep for his eighth homer of the year. He’s hitting .283/.400/.536 with 33 RBI and 20 runs scored in 42 games overall. It was unfortunate that the Pirates weren’t to get the win after his impressive batting. Baseball is a sport that requires both sides to work together as a unit, today the Pirates pitching did not come through for the team.
Pitching for the Pirates will be Nick Kingham. He was charged with three runs on eight hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings Tuesday in a no-decision versus the Cubs. Since taking a perfect game into the seventh inning in his debut against the Cardinals, he has allowed three or more earned runs in each of his past three starts.
St. Louis Cardinals's Latest Performance :
The Cardinals were able to beat the Pirates in the series opener as Munoz crushes a 3 run walk off in the 9th inning with that win they now have a record of 30-24 placing them 3rd in the NL Central they have now close the gap on the Cubs for the second place they trail by only half a game. Coming into this series the Cards are 9th in pitching with a 3.58 ERA on the season. They still have to improve their scoring since they are ranked 18th in the Major with 237 runs scored this season. The Cardinals have put 11 players on the disabled list the other players on the team are definitely stepping up.
Yairo Munoz hit a three-run, walk-off home run, part of a five-RBI night. Before he got on to the plate he knew exactly what he what he wanted to do. It is his first walk-off victory in his career. He contributed a two-run double in the Cards’ four-run first inning, but his services were needed again in the ninth with two on and the Cardinals trailing by a run. Instead of just plating the tying run, he did one better, smashing a Felipe Rivero fastball over the center field wall to end the game. The homer was his second in the majors and his second in four games, and the 23-year-old is now hitting .314/.364/.471 in 22 games. He has got his name all over the shortstop starting position. He is taking advantage of the opportunity presented to him.
Pitching for the Cardinals will be Michael Wacha. He allowed just one run over 6 2/3 innings in the Cardinals’ 6-1 win over the Brewers on Tuesday. He hasn’t given up more than two runs in any of his last eight starts. He hasn’t lost since his season debut way in March. He is 6-1 on the season with a 2.71 ERA.
