Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Washington Nationals vs Atlanta Braves

The two top teams in the NL East will be facing off once again at SunTrust Park, with only half a game separating the two in the standings. The Braves took the series opener as they will look to extend their lead on top of the division. The Nationals will look to bounce back after they got their 6 game winning streak snapped.

Washington Nationals's Latest Performance :

The Nationals got their 6 game winning streak snapped after losing at home to the Braves. They couldn’t figure out a way around the Braves pitcher Newcomb as he allowed 2 runs in seven innings. The Nationals are now the second-best pitching team in the Major with an ERA of 3.23 on the season they will look to bounce back after losing the series opener. The Nationals will be looking to retake the division lead once again as they only trail the Braves by half a game. The team main focus right now is to keep everyone healthy because they know they have the talent to compete against anyone in the Major and the wins will start to pile up. Despite the loss, the Nationals completed their best May by collecting 19 total wins.

Anthony Rendon went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. He hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning before adding an RBI single in the third, knocking both Nationals runs against Braves starter Sean Newcomb. It’s been a very good 10-game stretch for the 27-year-old, who’s 13-for-39 with six doubles and two homers in that time. The hot streak has his overall line at .272/.355/.493 with six homers, 17 RBI and 14 runs scored in 36 games played.

Pitching for the Nationals will be Jeremy Hellickson. He allowed just two runs over five innings Tuesday in the Nationals’ 3-2 victory in Baltimore. He continues to be a pleasant surprise for the Nats since taking over as their No. 5 starter. In his last five outings, he owns a 1.30 ERA and Washington is undefeated in those five games.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

The Braves were able to beat the Nationals in the series opener putting them back on top of the NL East division with a record of 33-23 a one-game lead over the Nationals. The Braves are no longer a surprise to the league anymore as many teams are now aware of what they are able to do and the hot start of the season was no fluke. The Braves are now the 4th batting team in the major with 282 runs scored this season. Winning the series opener really set the tone for the whole series. Sean Newcomb came through for the Braves in the opener as he allowed just two runs over seven innings, it was a great showing from Sean considering how good the Nationals are at pitching this season he really held his ground, he is now 6-0 on the season.

Ozzie Albies went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a run scored. He tacked on an important insurance run with his run-scoring double in the seventh inning, his eighth hit in his last 21 at-bats during a modest five-game hitting streak. The stretch has his line up to .278/.323/.535 while having 14 homers on the year. Ozzie has really made a case for MVP this season they expected him to do well in his second year in the league but no one expected him to be this good so soon. The Braves might have found themselves a player that they could build the franchise around.

Pitching for the Braves will be Anibal Sanchez. He allowed four runs on five hits in four innings against the Mets on May 29 in his first start since he was reinstated from the disabled list. Sanchez posted a 1.64 ERA in two April starts before straining his right hamstring.

Against The Spread Selection: Washington Nationals

My reason for the pick :

The Nationals should be able to steal one game on the road against the Braves as Sanchez will put up a masterful pitching performance at SunTrust park shutting down the Braves batters in this game. This game will show you how important it is to have a great pitcher on the team because he puts the team in great position to win. The race for the top spot in the NL East still remains very competitive between the two teams.
