Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Baltimore Orioles vs NY Mets

Game 1 of a 2-game series against the oft-struggling Baltimore Orioles and the NY Mets will take place at CitiField in New York, New York, on Tuesday at 7:10 pm EST.  The Orioles are currently in last place within the AL East and have lost 8 of their last 10 outings while the Mets have struggled as well being losers in 9 of their last 12 matchups and are currently in 4th place within the NL East division.  This will be the 1st meeting of the year amongst these two squads, however, both teams split a 2-game interleague set at Camden Yards dating back to 8-18-2015.

Baltimore Orioles's Latest Performance :

The Baltimore Orioles come into this matchup having lost their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-4. Recently, after a 4-game road series loss against the Boston Red Sox on 5-20-2018, the O’s followed this up by tying a 4-game set on the road against the White Sox on 5-24-2018.  They would follow this effort up by losing a 3-game road set against the Rays on 5-27-2018 while also getting swept in the following series in a 3-game home set versus the Washington Nationals on 5-30-2018 after a 2-0 loss in the finale.  Their opening matchup at home against the Yankees on 5-31-2018 was postponed due to weather conditions, however, the O’s lost both game 2 and 3 with the latter being an 8-5 loss on 6-2-2018.

For the season, the Orioles average only 3.71 runs per game (29th) with a team batting average of .231 (26th), 68 homers (11th) along with 17 stolen bases on the year (26th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 5.00 (27th) with 456 strikeouts (24th) along with 26 quality starts (10th).

Manny Machado (.327 BA, 226 AB) has been the most effective offensive option for the Orioles this year.  Meanwhile, Trey Mancini (.229 BA, 214 AB) and Adam Jones (.284 BA, 232 AB) have also been effective for the offensive attack.

Dylan Bundy (3-7, 68.2 IP, 69 H, 40 R, 16 HR, 20 BB, 83 SO, 4.46 ERA) and Kevin Gauseman (3-5, 70 IP, 81 H, 37 R, 13 HR, 17 BB, 66 SO) have pitched the most innings for the Orioles this season.

NY Mets's Latest Performance :

The New York Mets have lost 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-2.  Recently, the Mets played awful during a 4-game road set to the Milwaukee Brewers as they would lose the series on 5-27-2018.  They would, however, tie a 4-game road set versus the Atlanta Braves on 5-30-2018.  This momentum was not carried into their next series as they dropped the first 3 games of a 3-game home set versus the Chicago Cubs with the finale being on 6-3-2018.

For the season, the Mets are averaging 4.11 (22nd) with a team batting average of .238 (22nd), 59 homers (21st), along with 23 stolen bases (22nd).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.24 (19th) with 534 strikeouts (7th) along with 22 quality starts on the season (22nd).

Asdrubal Cabrera (.394 BA on 218 AB), and Jay Bruce (.227 BA on 181 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Mets this season.  Amed Rosario (.257 BA on 183 AB) has also been a critical component to the Mets’ scoring attack.

Jacob deGrom (4-0, 72.1 IP, 13 R, 54 H, 3 HR, 21 BB, 98 SO, 1.49 ERA) and Noah Syndergaard (4-1, 64.2 IP, 25 R, 63 H, 5 HR, 13 BB, 76 SO, 3.06 ERA) are the bright spots for their talented pitching staff.

How Baltimore Orioles & NY Mets Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Orioles are 20-38 ATS while the O/U is 26-31-1.  On the other hand, the Mets are 27-29 ATS while the O/U is 26-29-1.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

With 2 offenses where one has only averaged 1.2 runs per game in their last 5 (Orioles) against another that has only averaged 3.2 runs (Mets) couple with two teams that have lost a combined 15 of their last 17 games, one would have to think that one of these teams will certainly gain some momentum in this series by getting the win.  Things could certainly get much better for the Mets as Dylan Bundy (3-7) will be coming to the hill on Tuesday looking to not only get his 4th win of the year, but, curb the way in which teams have feasted on him as it relates to the long ball.  Bundy has given up 15 homers in his last 6 starts while allowing 2 in his last start in a 3-2 home loss to the Nationals on 5-29-2018.  In all, it will be interesting to see how the cold Mets lineup responds to a pitcher that has really struggled on the mound in 2018.

Totals Selection: Over

My reason for the prediction :

Aside from the solid DeGrom and Syndergaard, the Mets have been decimated by injury and inconsistency at the mound this year.  It is for this reason that I expect them to give up some runs even to the struggling offense for the Orioles in this matchup.  On the other hand, in Bundy’s last 6 starts, he has given up 38 runs.  Combine this with the fact that the over has been the play in 5 of his last 7 outings in addition to both teams, particularly the Mets, playing very shaky defense lately, I will side with the over in this contest.
