Atlanta Braves vs San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres are set to close out their 3 game home series at PETCO Park against National League foe in the Atlanta Braves before traveling across the country to Miami, first pitch is slated for 3:40 PM ET. After this series, these two teams will meet again on 6/14 when Atlanta will play host to San Diego for a 4 game set.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

Sanchez Excellent

The Atlanta Braves have been one of the best teams through the first 2 months of baseball but given the Washington Nationals success as of recent, they find themselves in a tight race for the #1 spot in the NL East. The Atlanta Braves were successful in their series finale against the Nationals as they were able to pick up 1 4-2 win behind great pitching. Anibal Sanchez has dealt with injury all season long but his 4th start was easily his best as the 34-year-old went 7 shutout innings while only giving up 2 hits. Sanchez has been solid in his 13th season as he has a 2.16 ERA through 25 innings which is the best start of his lengthy career since his rookie season. The relievers were also very solid in Sanchez exit as the combination of Daniel Winkler and Arodys Vizcaino went the final 2 innings without giving up a run and struck out 3 guys in the process. Daniel Winkler hasn’t been only the best pitcher on the Braves but he has been one of the best relievers in baseball as the 28-year-old has a 2-0 record with a .74 ERA in 26 appearances. The Braves have been one of the best hitting teams in baseball as they rank inside the top 5 in runs scored and they extended their depth in this game as they used a pinch-hit HR to win the game. Former first-round pick Charlie Culberson replaced Vizcaino in the bottom of the 9th inning and the reserve 3B didn’t fail as he was able to connect on a ball for a 2-run HR to propel the Braves to a win. Culberson only has 2 HRs on the season but both have been monumental as they were both walk-offs.

San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :

Grand Slam Wins It

The San Diego Padres may be in last place in the NL West but that hasn’t taken the fight out of this young ballclub as they were able to rattle off 2 straight wins to close out their previous series against the Cincinnati Reds. The Padres were able to take their 6/3 matchup against the Reds 6-3 but it was done in a fashionable way as they received a pinch-hit grand slam. Former first-round pick Hunter Renfroe has been nothing to drool over in his 2nd MLB season but he showed a flash of excellence as he pinched-hit for Tyson Ross in the bottom of the 5th inning which resulted in a grand slam and his 3rd HR of the year. The Padres are hoping that their rookie slugger Christian Villaneuva is just banged up as the starting 3B left the game in the 1st inning with an injury. Villanueva has 15 HRs and 35 RBIs which are both team high’s so his absence would be a big blow to an already sluggish offense. The pitchers were serviceable in the Padres win as they held the Reds to only 3 runs but they need to improve on giving up hits as they gave up 12. Tyson Ross received his 12th start of 2018 and the right-handed pitcher gave a quality start as he gave up 2 earned runs in the 5 innings he appeared in. The relievers are what ultimately secured a win as the combination of Adam Cimber, Craig Stammen, Brad Hand, and Kirby Yates were only responsible for 1 run in the final 4 innings. Yates picked up his 1st save of the season but it didn’t come easy as the reliever gave up 3 hits in the 1 inning he appeared in.

Against The Spread Selection: Atlanta Braves

My reason for the pick :

The Atlanta Braves have been one of the best teams in baseball as they lead one of the deepest divisions in the MLB, and given the matchup we have on our hands here I have to go all in on the youngsters. The San Diego Padres have shown signs of potential throughout this season but they are still years away from being a contender. Foltynewicz has been solid for the Braves all season as he has an excellent ERA and he has only improved and he showed that in his recent start as he pitched one of the best games of his career. Atlanta should have no problem destroying the Padres pitching staff as they have been nothing great this season which will lead to yet another Atlanta victory.
