Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Los Angeles Dodgers vs Pittsburgh Pirates

Game 2 of a 3-game set against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers and the Pittsburgh Pirates will take place at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday night beginning at 7:05 pm EST.  The resurgent Dodgers have been able to pick up some wins lately, however, continue to occupy the 4th spot in the NL West while the Pirates have lost 6 of their last 8 games, ultimately, slipping to the number 4 slot within the NL Central division.  This will be the 1st matchup of the year amongst these two teams, however, the Dodgers have owned this matchup in recent meetings winning 6 of the last 7 with the Dodgers taking 3 of the last 4 games at PNC Park on 8-21-2017.

Los Angeles Dodgers's Latest Performance :

The Dodgers come into this matchup winners of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 4-1.  Recently, the Dodgers would win a 3-game home set against the San Diego Padres on 5-27-2018 while tying a 4-game home set against the Philadelphia Phillies on 5-31-2018.  They would also go on to sweep a 3-game road set against the Colorado Rockies on 6-3-2018.

The Dodgers average 4.63 runs per game (7th) with a team batting average of .241 (18th), 65 homers (17th), along with 17 stolen bases (28th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.69 (11th) with 581 strikeouts (3rd) along with 24 quality starts (17th).

Yasmani Grandal (.251 BA on 171 AB), Cody Bellinger (.225 BA on 213 AB), and Corey Seager (.267 BA on 101 AB) have been the leaders offensively for the Dodgers this season.  Chris Taylor (.256 BA on 227 AB) has also been pivotal to the Dodger’s offensive attack.

Clayton Kershaw (1-4) has pitched 49 innings while allowing 15 runs on 44 hits, 7 homers, 11 walks, and 53 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.76.  Alex Wood (1-4) has pitched 64.1 innings while allowing 35 runs on 60 hits, 8 homers, 13 walks, and 60 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.48.

Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :

The Pittsburgh Pirates have lost 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-4.  Recently, the Pirates would drop a 3-game home set to the St. Louis Cardinals on 5-27-2018 while followng this series up with a 3-game home series loss to the resurgent Chicago Cubs on 5-30-2018.  Furthermore, Pittsburgh would lose once again to the Cardinals in a 4-game home set on 6-3-2018.

For the season, the Pittsburgh Pirates average 4.59 runs per game (8th) with a team batting average of .254 (12th), 64 homers (18th) along with 21 stolen bases (25th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.16 (16th) with 479 strikeouts (20th) along with 27 quality starts on the year (9th).

Corey Dickerson (.312 BA on 208 AB), Francisco Cervelli (.278 BA on 144 AB), Starling Marte (.290 BA on 193 AB), and Colin Moran (.281 BA on 160 AB) have been the most consistent hitters in the lineup for the Pirates this year.  Jordy Mercer (.254 BA on 185 AB) and Josh Bell (.243 BA on 214 AB) have also been solid for Pittsburgh this year at the plate.

Trevor Williams (5-3, 68 IP, 29 R, 60 H, 7 HR, 22 BB, 47 SO, 3.84 ERA) and Ivan Nova (2-5, 61.2 IP, 39 R, 73 H, 10 HR, 10 BB, 42 SO, 4.96 ERA) have been shining stars on the mound for the Pirates this year.

How Los Angeles Dodgers & Pittsburgh Pirates Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Dodgers are 25-34 ATS while the O/U is 29-27.  On the other hand, the Pirates are 27-32 ATS while the O/U is 28-25-2.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The Dodgers have won 2-straight and 12 of their last 16 games, a significant accomplishment for a team that had to battle significant injuries to both their lineup along with pitching staff this season.  The Pirates, on the other hand, come into this game in a funk in losing 11 of their last 15 games, largely due to poor offense coupled with not enough solid pitchers on their staff in which to absorb the overall decrease in production on the offensive end.  Nonetheless, this game will be interesting for LA in that they are very close to overtaking the 3rd spot in the NL West from the Giants, who have played horrible recently.  Furthermore, with the Dodgers winning 6 of their last 8 on the road, it will be interesting to see if they can somehow continue their upward momentum on the road in game 2.

Against The Spread Selection: Los Angeles Dodgers

My reason for the pick :

I will go with the Dodgers to win this matchup in that the Pirates have only averaged a measly 3.3 runs per game in their last 8 outings.  In their last 3 wins, the Dodgers have averaged over 10 runs per game and would love to continue their streak against a team in the Bucs that have given up an average of 7 runs in their last 3 losses.  Again, I will have to pick the Dodgers who have also been stellar on the road recently to pull out an all-important win in this contest on Wednesday and to possibly have an opportunity to increase their overall position in the division.
