Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
NY Yankees vs Toronto Blue Jays
The finale of a short, 2-game set between the visiting NY Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays will take place at Rodgers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on Wednesday at 7:07 pm EST. Toronto has lost 15 of their last 18 games and, were it not for a horrible Baltimore Orioles team, they now reside in the 4th place slot within the AL East division. On the other hand, the Yankees continue their tear by winning 6 of their last 8 games and are directly on the heels of the division’s 1st place team: Boston Red Sox. This will be the 3rd meeting of the year amongst these two teams as the Yankees have won 5 of the last 8 meetings while tying the series at Rodgers Center in a 4-game set on 4-1-2018.
NY Yankees's Latest Performance :
The Yankees have won 4 of their last 5 matchups to where the O/U was 2-2-1. After a 3-game home series win versus the Los Angeles Angels and the Houston Astros on 5-30-2018, the Yankees would remain hot in winning games 2 and games 3 of a 4-game road set against the struggling Baltimore Orioles with games 1 and 4 being postponed due to weather conditions. Nowenrheless, the Yankees, as stated, continue to be on fire as they have dominated in 18 of their last 25 contests.
For the season, the Yankees average 5.65 runs per game (1st) with a team batting average of .259 (5th), 90 home runs (1st), along with 28 stolen bases (17th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.80 (12th) with 555 strikeouts (5th), along with 27 quality starts on the season (8th).
Aaron Judge (.288 BA on 205 AB), Didi Gregorius (.245 BA on 200 AB), and Brett Gardner (.263 BA on 190 AB) have been outstanding for the Yankees this year at the plate. Giancarlo Stanton (.248 BA on 210 AB) and Miguel Andujar (.294 BA on 180 AB) have also been solid at the plate thus far.
On the other hand, Luis Severino (8-1) has pitched 78 innings while allowing 20 runs on 55 hits, 4 homers, 21 walks, and 92 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.31 while Masahiro Tanaka(7-2) is also an important piece to the Yankee pitching staff as he has pitched 67.2 innings while allowing 38 runs on 59 hits, 15 homers, 18 walks, and 69 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.72.
Toronto Blue Jays's Latest Performance :
The Blue Jays are losers of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 4-1. Recently, Toronto would get a 3-game road series win over the Philadelphia Phillies on 5-27-2018. The momentum would not transfer to their following 3-game road set versus the Boston Red Sox as the Jays were outscored 22-10 in the set and were swept on 5-30-2018. On 6-3-2018, the Jays lost yet another series, this against the surging Detroit Tigers on the road.
For the season, the Toronto Blue Jays are averaging 4.58 runs per game (9th) with a team batting average of .229 (28th), 73 homers (8th) along with 22 stolen bases (24th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.77 (25th) with 491 strikeouts (18th) along with 19 quality starts on the season (26th).
Kevin Pillar (.259 BA on 220 AB), Justin Smoak (.258 BA on 190 AB), and Yangervis Solarte (.257 BA on 218 AB) have been the offensive spearheads for the Toronto Blue Jays this season.
Pitcher JA Happ (7-3, 70.2 IP, 34 R, 60 H, 10 HR, 20 BB, 87 SO with an ERA of 4.08) has been the most consistent pitcher for the Blue Jay’s bullpen this year. Aaron Sanchez (3-5, 66.1 IP, 36 R, 61 H, 8 HR, 38 BB, 50 SO with an ERA of 4.48) has also been a pitvotal piece to the rotation, despite his lackluster performances this season.
How NY Yankees & Toronto Blue Jays Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, the Yankees are 31-23 ATS while the O/U is 31-21-2. On the other hand, the Blue Jays are 30-29 ATS while the O/U is 29-24-6.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The Yankees have certainly declared in the past that they are indeed the better team against the Blue Jays. They are also seemingly on a mission to surpass the Red Sox as the AL East’s most dominant team. On the other hand, the Blue Jays continue to struggle both on the mound and at the plate. In fact, in their last 5 losses, the Jays only mustered a tad over 3 runs per game while their opponents averaged 6.1 runs per. Sam Gaviglio (2-1) will take the hill for Toronto in this matchup and will be his first matchup against this Yankees lineup. Nonetheless, as stated, the Blue Jays pulled out the tie in their last matchup with New York at Rodgers Centre, which will make this matchup on Wednesday an interesting game, overall.
Against The Spread Selection: New York Yankees
My reason for the pick :
Though the game will be interesting (mainly due to its potential impact for the Yankees), I do not feel confident in believing that Toronto will somehow pull the almost impossible and play focused and consistent in this finale. In fact, I feel as though the pitching staff will perform just as they have all season. This, of course, will not due in that the Yankees lineup has been on fire recently averaging over 5 runs per game over their last 5 games while it would be important to note that their pitching staff has only given up just over 3 runs to their opponents during this time. In all, take the Yankees to, once again, assert their dominance over yet another division foe on Wednesday.
