Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Colorado Rockies vs Cincinnati Reds

The Cincinnati Reds are set to close out their 3 game home series at Great American Ball Park against National League foe in the Colorado Rockies, first pitch is slated for 12:35 PM ET. Entering this series, these two teams met for a 3 game series from 5/25 to 5/27 where the Colorado Rockies won 2 of those 3 matchups.

Colorado Rockies's Latest Performance :

Slumping Rockies

The Colorado Rockies were able to take full advantage of the Arizona Diamondbacks struggles in late May but the Rockies have shown their inconsistencies in a recent series against the Los Angeles Dodgers as they dropped 3 straight games and has dropped them down to 2nd place in the NL West. The Colorado Rockies started off their 6/3 matchup against the Dodgers on a high note as they were up 6-1 on them through the first 2 innings but inconsistencies in their pitching staff caused them to drop the game 10-7. Chad Bettis has been one of the best starters for the Rockies all season as the 29-year-old enters this series with a 4-1 record and a 4.02 ERA but his 12th start of the season wasn’t his prettiest as he gave up 5 earned runs on 7 hits in only 5.2 innings of work. The next 3 relievers were excellent in Bettis exit as they held the Dodgers to only 1 hit in 2.1 innings but what happened in the 9th inning is what eventually lost the game. Wade Davis has been one of the best closers in baseball in his lengthy career but the veteran struggled in this matchup as he gave up 3 earned runs in the 1 inning he appeared in. The Rockies were solid offensively as they were able to squeeze out 7 runs on 8 hits and more specifically their 3-5 hitters were great as they drove in 6 of the 7 runs. Ian Desmond was able to go yard for the 10th time this season which is a relief for the 32-year-old as the veteran was only able to hit 7 HRs through 95 games in 2017.

Cincinnati Reds's Latest Performance :

Castillo Destroyed

The Cincinnati Reds have no apparent direction in terms of the way they want to run their franchise as they have not only been one of the worst teams in baseball but they still host some of their valuable assets who can be traded away for prospects. The Reds have one of the youngest pitching staffs in baseball and one of those guys is starter Luis Castillo who has struggled in his 2nd year as a starter. Castillo 13th start of the season was in their series finale against the San Diego Padres and not much has improved as the 25-year-old gave up 4 earned runs on 6 hits in only 4.2 innings of work. Castillo entered this series with a 4-6 record and a 5.64 ERA which is one of the worst ERAs on a bottom 5 pitching staff. The Reds bullpen wasn’t much better in Castillo’s exit as Wandy Peralta and Rasiel Iglesias gave up 2 earned runs in the 1.2 innings they appeared in.  Peralta and Iglesias may have had a bad outing but these outings have been scarce this year as the two relievers combine for a 3.18 ERA in over 53 appearances. The bats for the Reds were once again silent which has become the ordinary for this bottom feeder offense as they were only able to score 3 runs. The Reds were led by one of their few offenses weapons in Scooter Gennett who went 2 for 4 and delivered 2 RBIs. Gennett was able to connect on a ball in the top of the 8th inning which extended his season total to 12 HRs, this has put the 28-year-old not only on top of the batting average list (.342) but also on top of the HR leaderboard.

How Colorado Rockies & Cincinnati Reds Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Colorado is 30-29, 19-13 on the road.

Cincinnati is 21-39, 9-19 at home.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The probable starting pitchers for this matchup is as follows: Tyler Anderson (3-1, 5.07 ERA) for the Colorado Rockies vs. Tyler Mahle (4-6, 4.38 ERA) for the Cincinnati Reds.

Anderson last started on 6/1 against the Dodgers where he went 5 innings giving up 5 earned runs on 7 hits in a ND.

Mahle last started on 6/1 against the Padres where he went 5 shutout innings striking out 5 guys in a W.

Colorado and Cincinnati both rank in the bottom 15 in runs scored.

Colorado and Cincinnati both rank in the bottom 10 in team ERA.

Against The Spread Selection: Colorado Rockies

My reason for the pick :

Mahle has been much better as of recent for the Cincinnati Reds but I just don’t trust the rookie just yet as he has been very inconsistent this season (hence his 4-6 record). Anderson may have a 5.07 ERA but he has received a good amount of offensive support in his starts which has allowed him to jump out to a solid start this season in the win-loss department. Even if these two young pitchers cancel each other out I still give the advantage to the Rockies lineup who has a ton of weapons who they can throw at the bottom 5 Reds pitching staff. The Rockies know they need to be much better especially if they still have hopes of making the playoffs once again. Rockies pick up a road win.
