Seattle Mariners's Latest Performance :

Winning Becoming Normal

The Seattle Mariners have finally cracked their so-so seasons as they have taken full control of a stacked AL West behind 8 wins in their last 10 matchups. The Mariners were able to close out their home series against Tampa Bay on a high note as they were able to not only pick up their 4th straight win but receive great pitching from one of their struggling starters. Seattle elected to start their former ace Felix Hernandez who has been nothing like his Cy Young season as the 32-year-old enters this series with a 6-4 record and a 5.33 ERA. King Felix was much improved in his 13th start of the season as the right-handed starter was able to go 8 innings while only giving up 1 earned run and striking out 7 guys. Hernandez may be out of his prime and nothing like his 15-6 season a couple of years ago but if the Mariners can continue receiving solid outings from the veteran they may have a chance of making a run in the postseason. The Mariners had yet another solid outing from their young closer Edwin Diaz as the 24-year-old was able to pick up his 21st save of the season behind a hitless 9th inning. The bats for the Mariners were silent for most of the game but they were able to score both runs in the bottom of the 8th inning. Denard Span was once a Tampa Bay Ray but the veteran was able to send his former team packing as he hit an RBI single in the 8th inning which was his 1st in Seattle. As good as a win sounds, the Mariners want to get their bats back on track as 6 of their 9 starters went hitless in this 6/3 matchup.

Tampa Bay Rays's Latest Performance :

Snell Lights Out

The Tampa Bay Rays may be a few games under .500 but they have exceeded the expectations of many typical baseball fans as their roster doesn’t host the big name superstar that we have become accustomed to. The Rays were not able to close out their recent series against the Seattle Mariners on a high note as they gave up 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning which caused them to drop their 6/3 matchup 2-1. One guy who can not be blamed for the Rays loss is the young southpaw Blake Snell who has straight dominated in his first 13 starts of 2018. A good season was needed out of the former first-round pick as the youngster entered this season with a career record of 11-15 and a 3.79 ERA. Snell may not have been able to extend his season win total to 8 in his latest start but the 25-year-old was really good as he struck out 12 guys in 6 shutout innings of work. Snell has overtaken Chris Archer (3-4, 4.24 ERA) in the discussion for the profound ace of the future as Snell holds the best record (7-3) and best ERA (2.36) out of all Tampa starters. The Tampa Bay Rays offense was not able to squeeze out much of anything as they were only able to score 1 run on 5 hits. Brad Miller delivered the lone RBI in this ball game as he roped a double in the top of the 4th inning to bring his season total to 19 RBIs. The top of the lineup struggled for Tampa as the 1-4 hitters went a combined 0 for 13 from the plate which will not lead to success for an already bat slacking offense.

Seattle and Tampa Bay both rank in the top 15 in team ERA.

Against The Spread Selection: Seattle Mariners

My reason for the pick :

I have been saying it all season long as the Seattle Mariners have one of the best-underrated lineups in baseball as the only thing that has held them back from being a constant playoff team is their deep division. The Rays have gone an untraditional way of starting pitchers as they have put relievers in the rotation constantly which has been both good and bad for them this year. Leake has been solid for Seattle as he has really ramped up his play over his last few starts and with the way that Tampa Bay has been hitting the ball as of recent I can’t trust them to put up an abundance of runs against a solid pitcher. Seattle knows they are in a tight race int he AL West and with this being a winnable game I expect the coaches to make sure this team is focused on the task. Seattle wins on the road.

Betting trends for Seattle Mariners:

  • Seattle is 5-1 against AL East opponents this season.

  • The over is 15-12 on the road this season.

Betting trends for Tampa Bay Rays:

  • Tampa Bay is 18-20 against right-handed pitchers this season.

  • The under is 17-11-1 after a loss this season.
