Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Baltimore Orioles vs Toronto Blue Jays
Game 2 of a 4-game set between the visiting Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays will take place at 7:07 pm EST at Rodgers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on Friday night. The Blue Jays had lost 5-straight before an 8-4 road win versus the Detroit Tigers on 6-3-2018 got them back into the win column. The Jays, nonetheless, would come out flat in the game 2 against the Yankees and would fall 7-2. They continue to occupy 4th place within the AL East division. The Orioles, on the other hand, continue to have a disastrous season losing not only 9 of their last 12 games, but, lost 2 of 4 against the Yankees in their last series with 2 games being postponed due to weather conditions. This will be the 2nd meeting of the year amongst these two teams with the Blue Jays taking 2 of 3 earlier in the season in a 3-game set at Camden Yards on 4-11-2018.
Baltimore Orioles's Latest Performance :
The Blue Jays are losers of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-2. Recently, Toronto would get a 3-game road series win over the Philadelphia Phillies on 5-27-2018. The momentum would not transfer to a 3-game road set versus the Boston Red Sox as the Jays were outscored 22-10 in the set and were swept on 5-30-2018. On 6-3-2018, the Jays lost yet another series, this against the surging Detroit Tigers on the road. Furthermore, the Jays lost the opener of a short, 2-game home set versus the dangerous NY Yankees on 6-5-2018.
For the season, the Toronto Blue Jays are averaging 4.53 runs per game (9th) with a team batting average of .227 (29th), 75 homers (8th) along with 22 stolen bases (24th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.80 (25th) with 500 strikeouts (18th) along with 20 quality starts on the season (26th).
Kevin Pillar (.260 BA on 223 AB), Justin Smoak (.254 BA on 193 AB), and Yangervis Solarte (.257 BA on 222 AB) have been the offensive spearheads for the Toronto Blue Jays this season.
Pitcher JA Happ (7-3, 70.2 IP, 34 R, 60 H, 10 HR, 20 BB, 87 SO with an ERA of 4.08) has been the most consistent pitcher for the Blue Jay’s bullpen this year. Aaron Sanchez (3-5, 66.1 IP, 36 R, 61 H, 8 HR, 38 BB, 50 SO with an ERA of 4.48) has also been a pivotal piece to the rotation, despite his lackluster performances this season.
Toronto Blue Jays's Latest Performance :
The Baltimore Orioles come into this matchup having lost 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-4. Recently, after losing a 3-game road set against the Rays on 5-27-2018 while also getting swept in the following series in a 3-game home set versus the Washington Nationals on 5-30-2018, their opening matchup at home against the Yankees on 5-31-2018 was, as stated, postponed due to weather conditions; However, the O’s lost both game 2 and 3 with the latter being an 8-5 loss on 6-2-2018. The O’s would finally get a win in game 1 of a short, 2-game road set versus the lowly Mets via a 2-1 victory on 6-5-2018.
For the season, the Orioles average only 3.68 runs per game (29th) with a team batting average of .231 (27th), 68 homers (14th) along with 18 stolen bases on the year (27th). Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.93 (26th) with 465 strikeouts (24th) along with 27 quality starts (10th).
Manny Machado (.326 BA, 230 AB) has been the most effective offensive option for the Orioles this year. Meanwhile, Trey Mancini (.234 BA, 218 AB) and Adam Jones (.284 BA, 236 AB) have also been effective for the offensive attack.
Dylan Bundy (3-7, 68.2 IP, 69 H, 40 R, 16 HR, 20 BB, 83 SO, 4.46 ERA) and Kevin Gauseman (3-5, 70 IP, 81 H, 37 R, 13 HR, 17 BB, 66 SO) have pitched the most innings for the Orioles this season.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This will certainly be a matchup of the weakest teams within the AL East division with each looking to pick up some wins, starting with Friday night’s contest. In a nutshell, both these teams have struggled mightily this season, and not being able to remain consistent either on offense, defense, or from the mound. As a result, the Jays have lost 12 of their last 17 while the O’s have been miserable in losing 13 of their last 18 contest, yet, ended a 7-game skid versus the Mets in game 1 of a 2-game road set by picking up the slim 2-1 victory on 6-5-2018. The Orioles occupy last place within the AL East division. J.A. Happ (7-3) will take the mound for the Jays on Friday looking for his 4th win in 5 starts. His last outing was not very impressive as he pitched only 5 innings while allowing 4 runs on 5 hits, 2 walks, 1 homer, and 8 strikeouts in a 7-4 road win at Detroit on 6-2-2018. The starter on the mound has not been named for the Orioles yet, however, if the past is any indication, one can certainly believe that runs will indeed be put up by the Jays as the O’s pitching staff has allowed just under 5 runs per game average in their last 8 games.
Against The Spread Selection: Toronto Blue Jays
My reason for the pick :
I do not have much confidence in either of these teams, however, I will say that the Blue Jays will certainly be more focused with ace J.A. Happ manning the mound. Happ has allowed only 2.3 runs per game in his last 4 outings while the over has been the play in 4 of his last 5 starts. The Orioles simply cannot get it going as a team and are only averaging 1.9 runs per game in their last 7 games. Along with trade rumors existing that point to their star Manny Machado becoming trade bait, I see external circumstances becoming a huge distraction for the O’s, thus becoming a detriment in them gaining any type of momentum moving forward.
